SUMMARY:PH x College: Intro to Inclusive Design in Museums
DESCRIPTION:How are museums morally and ethically obligated to ensure their spaces are accessible to all? And are they delivering on that obligation and including disabled individuals in such conversations? Join Poster House and artist\, educator\, and disability rights activist Oaklee Thiele in discussing the issue of museum accessibility and various measures cultural institutions can take to ensure all individuals are guaranteed the right to intellectually and physically engage with their texts and publications. \nThe workshop will include a breakout room session where attendees will be given a scenario that requires accessibility intervention. Attendees will then devise a solution to the problem using the tools and information provided in the talk\, and have the opportunity to give a three-minute presentation on their ideas to the larger group.  \nPoster House is a new museum that opened its doors in 2019. Although we do not yet have an exhaustive range of accessibility options\, this program is part of our effort toward more equitable spaces. Accessibility is a process\, and we are actively learning from disabled community members. \nPH x College is an ongoing series of programs designed by college students for college students and recent graduates who are interested in pursuing careers in art\, design\, or museums\, with an emphasis on providing professional development\, networking. and creative workshop opportunities. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. A recording of the event will be made available for all registered attendees. Questions about accessibility? SUMMARY:So Bad it's Good: Hot Takes with Gail Anderson & Zipeng Zhu
DESCRIPTION:Push Pin Studios rejected the stringent modernism of Madison Avenue advertising\, opting for vibrant\, humorous illustrations over slick photography and the Helvetica typeface. While the studio eventually grew to receive international acclaim for its design acumen\, its disruptive style was initially perceived as “bad design.” \nTonight\, we’re hosting a design battle royale between a grand dame of typography\, Gail Anderson\, and the knight of contemporary kitsch\, Zipeng Zhu as they put Push Pin under the microscope. This dynamic duo will be picking apart elements of “good” and “bad” design in the studio’s output\, discussing how those terms have stretched and evolved over the past 50 years\, and where Push Pin stands within the canon today. Expect hilarity\, design insight\, and poster history a’plenty. \nDesigner\, writer\, and educator Gail Anderson is Chair of BFA Design and BFA Advertising at the School of Visual Arts. SUMMARY:The History of the Afro with Michele Washington
DESCRIPTION:Join designer\, researcher\, writer\, and educator Michele Washington as she virtually guides us through the history of the AFRO\, illuminating how this ubiquitous hairstyle has endured over time\, from the late 1950s till today. Inspired by the powerful coiffs on display in You Won’t Bleed Me: How Blaxploitation Posters Defined Cool & Delivered Profits\, she will discuss how the Afro is ingrained in this genre of film\, how it defined Black beauty and visual culture\, and why it should be viewed as more than just a hairstyle. Natural hair has spawned a million-dollar Black hair care industry\, fostering an advertising shift during the ‘60s and ‘70s\,\ncementing the Afro’s ongoing popularity. \nMichele Y. Washington is a facilitator of design\, research\, and strategy who works with various cultural and community-based projects. She is an A’Lelia Bundles Columbia University Community Scholar; she holds a Master of Fine Arts in Design Criticism from the School of Visual Arts and a Master of Science in Visual Communications from the Pratt Institute. SUMMARY:Foxy Brown Screening at Nitehawk Cinema
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the current exhibition You Won’t Bleed Me\, Poster House is thrilled to partner with Nitehawk Cinema for a 35mm screening of the blaxploitation classic Foxy Brown. See Pam Greer’s iconic performance as the titular character on the big screen as it was meant to be seen! Featuring a live pre-show musical performance by Morricone Youth\, playing classics inspired by the movie soundtrack.  \nOne of the most important and influential films that defined the genre is Foxy Brown. The film represents the peak of both the popularity of Blaxploitation and arguably the genre’s biggest and most enduring star — Pam Grier. With its killer soundtrack\, sex appeal and audacious action\, its the perfect vehicle to showcase Grier’s unique screen presence (“She’s a whole lotta woman\,” as one character famously says) and a time capsule of what Blaxploitation was at its best and its most outrageous.  \nThis event is in-person and ticketed through Nitehawk Cinema.

SUMMARY:Genius on Display: Expanding Access with Cheryl Miller
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to welcome 2021 AIGA Award Medalist Cheryl D. Miller for an evening highlighting unsung Black and racialized designers of the 1960s and ‘70s. Set against the backdrop of our current exhibitions\, Miller’s talk will focus on the talented yet overlooked BIPOC designers of this era and the hurdles and systems that kept them out of the industry.
