SUMMARY:Japanese Woodblock Printing Demo: The Great Wave
DESCRIPTION:Japan is home to one of the most dynamic and revered print cultures in the world. Poster House is thrilled to partner with New York’s Ronin Gallery and Globus Washitsu to host woodblock printer Hironobu Numabe of Numabe Mokuhan print workshop in Tokyo for a demonstration showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of traditional Japanese printing. Numabe will discuss the technique\, history\, and joy of their art as well as presenting the related tools\, pigments\, and original woodblocks.  \nWhile some guests may have the opportunity to try their hand at this historic printing process\, the true highlight will be Numabe incredible reprinting of Hokusai’s Great Wave\, probably the most famous Japanese woodblock print of all time. In honor of Ronin Gallery’s 50th anniversary\, the team has remastered this iconic image for a contemporary audience. A few of these extremely high-quality\, limited-edition reprints will be available for purchase.  \nFounded in 1995 by Shinkichi Numabe\, Numabe Mokuhan printers do not merely reproduce famous Japanese prints but “remaster” them. Formerly the principal printer for Toshi Yoshida\, Shinkichi Numabe brings decades of expertise to Numabe Mokuhan. Whether printing from original woodblocks or creating new ones\, Shinkichi and Hironobu Numabe breathe new life into familiar designs\, printing them to the highest standard. Championing the craftsmen\, tools\, and materials that combine to create each print\, Numabe Mokuhan shares the spirit of traditional woodblock printmaking with a new generation. \nThis talk and demonstration is a drop-in program suitable for all ages. Questions are encouraged!

SUMMARY:First Friday: Let’s Walk Shop
DESCRIPTION:First Friday: Let’s Walk Shop—Dissect Chelsea’s Posters with a Professional Designer \nHave you ever wanted to analyze the posters we see on the street every day in the company of a professional? Join award-winning graphic designer Zipeng Zhu on a humor-filled\, energetic romp through Chelsea as he dissects\, criticizes\, praises\, and even tears apart (not literally) contemporary advertising posters that have been flypasted around NYC. Learn how to look at a poster through a designer’s lens and get a feel for good (and bad) composition\, color\, balance\, and messaging.  \nEvent starts at PH but is throughout Chelsea. Attendees should be prepared to walk for about an hour on the streets of New York. Headsets will be provided to ensure you don’t miss any of Zipeng’s insightful (and witty!) commentary. \nZipeng Zhu is a Chinese-born artist\, designer\, educator\, and founder of the award-winning creative studio DAZZLE in New York City. He wants to make every day a razzle-dazzle musical. He has collaborated with iconic brands such as Apple\, Adidas\, Adobe\, Coca-Cola\, Instagram\, Microsoft\, Netflix\, the New York Times\, the New Yorker Magazine\, Uber\, MTV\, and Samsung. His work has been exhibited at major museums and institutions in cities all over the world\, including New York\, Barcelona\, Dubai\, Shanghai\, Beijing\, and Mumbai. Zipeng dedicates his days running both the Dazzle Studio and merch shop Dazzle Supply\, bringing his dazzling design to clients and everyday fans around the globe.  \nAccessibility Note: The museum will be providing headsets that are compatible with standard RF devices so that the tour guide can be heard above the street noise. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:Punk vs. Psychedelic Posters: A Battle Royale
DESCRIPTION:Punk or psychedelia—which genre reigns supreme? In honor of our exhibition Copy/Paste/Print/Repeat: Mike King & the Art of the Gig Poster\, join gig poster maestro and noted punk enthusiast Mike King as he faces psychedelic poster superfan and scholar Ted Bahr in the ultimate smackdown: a battle of wits\, nerve\, and design ferocity over their individual passion for their favorite poster styles. Who will win? Who will lose? And who will get the intellectual crap kicked out of them? Tune in\, place your bets\, and may the best poster win! \nMike King started his career as a poster artist in the late 1970s designing posters for punk bands in his hometown of Portland\, Oregon. Within a few years\, he was making show posters for a wide variety of bands throughout the Northwest. After four decades\, Mike is now widely regarded as America’s most prolific concert poster artists and designs posters for shows around the world. Whether making posters for country\, jazz or folk artists\, his work maintains at least a hint of his punk aesthetic.  \nTed Bahr’s love for psychedelic posters began when he moved to San Francisco in the 1980s\, exposing him to bands from the much lauded psychedelic period as well as\, most importantly\, their concert posters. He began fanatically collecting first printings of these incredible works of graphic design\, educating himself along the way—and then\, in 2017\, he hosted his first gallery show. Today\, he owns the Bahr Gallery in Oyster Bay\, Long Island specializing in psychedelic posters.  \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs.
