Our Chief Curator will once again be hosting Nicholas Lowry of Swann Auction Galleries and Don Spiro of The Green Fairy Society over Zoom as they explore the realm of herbacious liqueurs. \nWhile not everyone’s go-to at the bar today\, amaros\, fortified wines\, and other herbal liqueurs were incredibly popular in the heyday of the lithographic poster. Afterwards\, Don will use many of the liqueurs shown in the posters to create three more fabulous cocktails\, teaching you how to incorporate these unique flavor profiles into your home bar. \nTo best prepare for the evening\, the ingredients for Don’s cocktails are listed below! SUMMARY:Virtual Cooking Class with Aux Epices: Last Goodbye
DESCRIPTION:Mei Chau\, owner of the Malaysian French restaurant Aux Epices\, has sadly announced that she is closing the restaurant permanently. As a farewell gift to the community\, Mei is hosting a very special Zoom cooking class\, teaching two amazing dishes that were popular at her beloved restaurant. She’ll be joined by “Stir-Fry Guru” Grace Young\, author of Stir-Frying to the Sky’s Edge.  \nThis summer menu will include Malaysian-Style Turmeric Shrimp (or Tofu) and Spicy Cucumber Salad with Preserved Mango. You can serve the meal with either steamed rice or a crusty baguette. The class is free\, but any donations will greatly help us support this event and Mei’s participation. \nMei has been kind enough to share her story with us since March as part of Coronavirus: Chinatown Stories\, a video series by Grace Young and Dan Ahn detailing the harsh realities and uplifting narratives emerging in the Chinese community. We are honored to work with Grace\, a partnership that arose out of programmatic collaboration for our current exhibition The Sleeping Giant: Posters & The Chinese Economy. \nWe invite you to cook along with Mei and Grace in real time. The recipes are listed below\, where you’ll also find resources for where to buy more specialized ingredients. Please note that you will need to have your ingredients pre-measured and ready for the session or you can just watch and cook later at your convenience. Mei will show you how to handle dried curry leaves\, as well as the easiest way to cut the cucumber and preserved mango. If you’re using fresh green mango\, Mei will demonstrate a simple way to cut it. In this session\, you’ll also learn tips from Mei and Grace for using a wok and mastering the stir-fry technique. The recipe will also require a 14-inch flat-bottomed carbon-steel wok and a small food processor. If you do not have a wok\, a 12-inch stainless-steel skillet will work. While the event is free to everyone\, all donations will be used in support of this event. \nAbout Mei Chau \nMei Chau was born into an immigrant Chinese family in Malaysia. As a young girl\, she learned to cook from her mother who ran a food stall. Her dream to be an artist led her across the globe\, and she ultimately settled in New York\, studying at Parsons School of Design. In 1993\, she and her husband\, Marc Kaczmarek\, a photographer\, opened Franklin Station Cafe to supplement their income as artists\, and it soon became a much-loved neighborhood fixture until its closing in 2008. In 2013\, Mei opened Aux Epices (meaning “with spice” in French) on Baxter Street in Chinatown\, with an emphasis on Malaysian and French dishes that are flavored with herbs and spices. \nAbout Grace Young \nNamed the “Poet Laureate of the wok” by the food historian Betty Fussell\, Grace Young has devoted her career to preserving the traditions of wok cookery. She is currently working on Coronavirus: Chinatown Stories\, a video series created with Dan Ahn in collaboration with Poster House. Grace’s accolades include James Beard awards for her video the Wok Therapist and cookbook Stir-Frying to the Sky’s Edge. She is the co-founder of Wok Wednesdays\, an online stir-fry group\, and has taught over 12\,000 students with her popular Blueprint online class The Art of Stir-Frying. \n  \nRECIPE INSTRUCTIONS \nSpicy Cucumber Salad with Preserved Mango  \nAccording to Mei\, dried shrimp is the secret ingredient that gives this salad a distinct and special taste. Dried shrimp is available at Po Wing Hong market in New York’s Chinatown or you can call in the order (212) 966-1080\, and they will ship it to you. Mei likes the small shrimp at $8.99 a pound. You can make the salad without the shrimp—according to Mei\, the salad will still be delicious but a little more ordinary. Preserved pickled mango with chili is available online at Walmart. If you cannot find it\, you can use one fresh green mango that’s been peeled and cut into matchsticks. You’ll also want the juice from 1/2 a lime\, which adds a tartness that’s necessary. If you’re using preserved mango there’s no need to add the lime juice.  \n3 kirby cucumbers \n1 cup preserved pickled mango with chili\, cut into matchsticks \n1/4 large red bell pepper\, seeds removed and cut into chunks \n1/2 cup (about 4 ounces) dried shrimp soaked in 1 cup cold water 30 minutes (optional) \n3 -4 small shallots\, peeled and halved \n1 red Anaheim chili pepper\, halved\, seeds removed and cut into 4 pieces  \n5 to 6 fresh mint leaves\, chopped \n1/4 teaspoon salt \n1/8 teaspoon sugar  \nCut thin lengthwise strips from the cucumber with a vegetable peeler\, leaving about a 1/4-inch wide space between strips. Halve the cucumber crosswise. If the cucumber has big\, mature seeds\, remove them. Cut the cucumber into roughly 3-inch long and 1/4-inch wide matchsticks and put in a salad bowl. Cut the mango into matchsticks. You should have about 1/2 the amount of mango as the cucumber. Add the mango to the salad bowl.  \nIn a small food processor\, combine the red bell pepper\, drained shrimp (optional)\, shallots\, and chilies. Pulse until it is the consistency of ground peanuts. It should not be smooth or liquified. Add this to the cucumber mixture and toss until just combined. Add chopped mint\, salt\, sugar—toss to combine.  \nServes 4 \n  \nMalaysian-Style Turmeric Shrimp or Tofu\n \nCurry leaves have a wonderful fragrance and Mei uses them here to infuse the shrimp or tofu with fresh citrus flavor. I was completely surprised when she told me fresh dill can be used in its place—this unexpected substitution is inspired\, no doubt\, from her exposure to French cuisine. I have cooked the dish with dill leaves\, and while they are totally different from the flavor of curry leaves\, the stir-fry remains scrumptious. Curry leaves are most often found in Indian markets and in some markets specializing in Southeast Asian ingredients. You can also find dried curry leaves online at Walmart.  \n2 small dried red chilies or ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes \n9 dried or fresh curry leaves\, or 1 tablespoon fresh chopped dill sprigs  \n1 pound large shrimp\, peeled and deveined OR one 14-ounce package extra-firm tofu\n \n¼ teaspoon ground turmeric \n1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper \n½ teaspoon sugar \n2 tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil \n1 tablespoon chopped garlic \n1 tablespoon chopped shallots \n½ teaspoon salt \nIn a small bowl\, cover the small chilies in cold water for 1 hour. Drain the chilies and cut them into ½-inch pieces with the seeds. If using dried curry leaves\, soak in cold water for 30 minutes\, then squeeze out excess water. Using kitchen shears\, cut through the shrimp shells two-thirds of the length down the back of the shrimp. Remove the legs and devein the shrimp\, leaving the shells and tails on. If using tofu\, rinse and cut into roughly 1-inch cubes. Pat the tofu dry with paper towels.  In a medium bowl combine the shrimp/tofu\, chilies\, curry leaves\, turmeric\, and pepper. Stir to combine and marinate for 20 minutes. Stir in the sugar.   \nHeat a 14-inch flat-bottomed wok or 12-inch skillet over high heat until a bead of water vaporizes within 1 to 2 seconds of contact. Swirl in the oil\, add the garlic and shallots. Then\, using a metal spatula\, stir-fry for 10 seconds or until the aromatics are fragrant. Push the aromatics to the sides of the wok. Carefully add the shrimp/tofu and spread them evenly in one layer in the wok. Cook undisturbed for 30 seconds\, letting the shrimp/tofu begin to sear. Then\, stir-fry 1 minute or until the shrimp/tofu just begins to turn color. Sprinkle on the salt and stir-fry for 1 minute or until the shrimp/tofu have completely turned orange/browned. Cover and allow to stand for 30 seconds off the heat. Uncover and stir-fry for a few seconds or until the shrimp/tofu are just cooked through. \nServes 4 with rice or crusty bread.

SUMMARY:Virtual Event: Myth as a Contemporary Practice—a Conversation with Chen Dongfan
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to be partnering with China Institute on a series of events in honor of The Sleeping Giant: Posters & The Chinese Economy. Due to the COVID-19 global health crisis\, many of these events are now taking place online. \nJoin China Institute on July 22 for a live virtual program with the artist Chen Dongfan. \nChina is racing into the future\, but the way artist Chen Dongfan sees it\, mythology still looms large in its collective imagination. The Wuhan hospitals built with lightning speed to address the coronavirus\, for example\, were named Thunder God Mountain and the Fire God Mountain. Chen is fascinated by the role that mythology plays in contemporary society: from the Mexican Muralists’ interest in Prometheus to pop TV fantasy and sci-fi that takes on folkloric characteristics. In this thought-provoking conversation\, the artist shares with curator Xin Wang how mythology informs his graffiti-like murals (he transformed Chinatown’s Doyers Street in 2018 into a celebration of color) and perspectives on being a recent immigrant artist. Chen’s work looks deeply at contemporary culture\, and asks\, is our subconscious still driven by ancient mythological beliefs? \n\n\nChen Dongfan (b. 1982 in Shandong province\, China) earned his B.F.A. in 2008 from the China Academy of Art\, Hangzhou. Known for his expressive\, color-popping compositions\, the artist has also created large-scale public art projects worldwide\, including: Uncertain (Hangzhou\, 2010); Where Is The Happiness? (Hangzhou\, 2011); Dream (Turin\, 2011); and Live Before You Die (Athens\, 2016); all of which are permanent installations. In Summer 2018\, Chen was selected to realize a site-specific public art project\, co-presented by NYCDOT and Chinatown Partnership\, on Doyers Street in New York. The street mural\, titled The Song of Dragon and Flowers\, covered the asphalt pavement of the entire 200-foot-long street to much public acclaim and wide media coverage. Chen moved to New York in 2014\, where he continues to live and work.

SUMMARY:Virtual Talk: The Racially Segregated Black Fives Era of Basketball
DESCRIPTION:Generations before the NBA\, hundreds of pioneering African American basketball players\, teams\, and contributors began paving the way for today’s star players. Their important achievements and gifts to the game were forgotten by history. Until now. \nJoin us for a special evening with Claude Johnson\, founder of the Black Fives Foundation\, where he will examine several rare and historically relevant early Black basketball posters from his organization’s renowned archives. Claude will share insights about these artifacts while exploring the impact that systemic racism had on African American basketball during that period\, which lasted from the early 1900s to 1950\, when the NBA signed its first Black players. \nClaude Johnson is a historian\, writer\, and founder of the Black Fives Foundation\, a 501(c)3 public charity whose mission is to research\, preserve\, showcase\, teach\, and honor the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball. Its trademarked slogan is “Make History Now.”

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: Chinatown's Historic Signage
DESCRIPTION:The streets of Chinatown have historically been defined by an intensity of urban life whose vitality almost overwhelms the senses of visitors from less frenetic places. Commercial signs and outdoor advertising have long been a key feature of Chinatown’s unique urban landscape. But with so much to look at in these streets\, signs tend to get lost in the mix. \nTaking a moment to spotlight Chinatown’s unique history of outdoor advertising\, this virtual program by design historian Thomas Rinaldi will explore the ways in which graphic design\, technology\, and cultural undercurrents converged to produce one of New York’s quintessential urban landscapes. \nThomas Rinaldi is the co-author of the book Hudson Valley Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of an American Landscape\, published by the University Press of New England in 2006\, and the author of New York Neon\, published by W.W. Norton in 2012. His photographs have been published in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Post\, The New York Observer\, Westchester Magazine\, CNN Online\, and elsewhere\, and have been exhibited at the Municipal Art Society of New York and at the New York State Museum in Albany.

SUMMARY:Virtual Talk: New York City in Posters
DESCRIPTION:New York City didn’t become the capital of the world overnight. The Big Apple also relied on world class advertising to attract visitors.  \nBefore it was a tourist destination\, New York City was (and still very much is) a port town\, a terminus for ships arriving from Europe and beyond. Between 1892 and 1924\, over 12 million immigrants arrived at Ellis Island in New York harbor. The gleaming city—a large\, bustling\, shiny magnet—with its towering buildings appeared on countless posters produced by steam ship and ocean liner companies.  \nThe city was also home to the headquarters of the New York Central Railroad\, with its 26\,000+ miles of tracks connecting the East Coast with the mid-Atlantic states and the Great Lakes region\, and to Grand Central Station (“the gateway to a continent”)\, a hub through which the rest of the country could be reached. It hosted the 1939 World’s Fair that counted almost 45 million visitors from around the country and around the world\, and it boasted soaring skyscrapers—awe-inspiring structures rising like ziggurats\, modern cathedrals to progress and imagination—and a cityscape unlike anywhere else. The city was home to Broadway and Times Square\, and a stylish\, incomparable urban hustle and bustle.  \nNow\, with tourism momentarily frozen due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, it is a perfect time to pause and reflect on the attributes of this great city that many of us take for granted. Over the past 100 years\, all the things we consider uniquely New York have been graphically presented in posters\, tempting an incredulous and eagerly-awaiting world to come and see the city that never sleeps.  \nJoin Poster House and Nicholas Lowry of Swann Auction Galleries as we view the historical\, promotional images that not only drove visitors to the city\, but delineated her amazing contours to countless others\, searing an indelible\, enviable image into the imaginative conscious of the world\, burnishing a mythology that New York City still generates today. \n

Add yeast and baking powder.\nAdd the water and oil slowly while mixing on the lowest speed until a smooth dough ball forms (1-2 min). You can do this by hand without a mixer\, but it will take longer.\nCover the dough with a damp cloth and let rest for approx. 2 hours\, until it doubles in size. This is a great time to prepare the bao filling!\nTurn the dough out onto a flat surface and gently knead by hand until the dough becomes smooth again (approx. 5 min). If the dough is dry\, add 1 to 2 tsp. water. Cover with a damp cloth and let rest for another 15 min.\nWhile the dough rests\, lay out ten flattened cupcake liners (you can also use a large piece of parchment paper cut into ten 4×4 inch squares). These are your boa coasters.\nTo make the buns\, roll the dough into a tube approx. 2 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 to 2 feet long\, and divide it into 10 equal pieces. This should be done right before the stat of class.\nReroll each piece of dough into a disc about 4 1/2 inches in diameter and about 1/4 inch thick. They should be thicker in the center and thinner around the edges. Cover with a damp towel.\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Thinking Outside The Grid: Social Design & Community Education\, Pt. 2
DESCRIPTION:The second of a two-part student series about the history of design as it relates to community organizing\, this event brings the theories of Part 1 into practice. \nThrough our hands-on workshop led by Isometric Studio\, students will gain the knowledge and resources to begin designing their own informational graphics on voting to disseminate among their social circles\, both online and through the power of the street-facing poster. \nUsing digital tools or paper and markers\, participants will design their own graphic posters while learning about type\, color\, and communication. \nIsometric Studio unites graphic design and architecture to create empowering visual identities and spatial experiences. Based in New York City\, Isometric collaborates with cultural institutions\, universities\, tech companies\, and nonprofits to reinvent the way they present themselves visually and strategically. Isometric clients include the USAID\, Google\, Museum of the City of New York\, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum\, the Center for Reproductive Rights\, and Princeton University.  \nAdditionally\, Isometric works with a variety of organizations that represent marginalized and underserved populations\, including civilians in zones of conflict\, subjects of human trafficking\, and the beneficiaries of chlorine and deworming programs. \nCollege Night aims to provide real resources to students who are interested in pursuing careers in art\, design\, and museums\, with an emphasis on breaking down the pathways and barriers that can intimidate young professionals when planning for their futures. Our student programming provides professional development opportunities such as a lecture series of museum professionals across departments and throughout the world of design\, as well as creative workshops\, resumé reviews\, and direct mentorship with our museum staffers. \nCollege Night moved online in March of 2020\, and is free of charge. SUMMARY:Ask A Curator Day
DESCRIPTION:For the past ten years\, museum curators around the world have come together for this annual one-day event where members of the public can take to social media and ask a curator everything and anything. \nPoster House’s Chief Curator\, Angelina Lippert\, will be joining in the fun this year\, providing content on our Instagram Stories and Twitter feeds. \nAsk a Curator\, was the brainchild of Jim Richardson\, founder of MuseumNext\, a conference on the future of museums. The idea was that a curious public would be able to question the keepers of cultural heritage about the objects in their care and what it is they do with them.
