SUMMARY:Virtual Talk: New York City in Posters
DESCRIPTION:New York City didn’t become the capital of the world overnight. The Big Apple also relied on world class advertising to attract visitors.  \nBefore it was a tourist destination\, New York City was (and still very much is) a port town\, a terminus for ships arriving from Europe and beyond. Between 1892 and 1924\, over 12 million immigrants arrived at Ellis Island in New York harbor. The gleaming city—a large\, bustling\, shiny magnet—with its towering buildings appeared on countless posters produced by steam ship and ocean liner companies.  \nThe city was also home to the headquarters of the New York Central Railroad\, with its 26\,000+ miles of tracks connecting the East Coast with the mid-Atlantic states and the Great Lakes region\, and to Grand Central Station (“the gateway to a continent”)\, a hub through which the rest of the country could be reached. It hosted the 1939 World’s Fair that counted almost 45 million visitors from around the country and around the world\, and it boasted soaring skyscrapers—awe-inspiring structures rising like ziggurats\, modern cathedrals to progress and imagination—and a cityscape unlike anywhere else. The city was home to Broadway and Times Square\, and a stylish\, incomparable urban hustle and bustle.  \nNow\, with tourism momentarily frozen due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, it is a perfect time to pause and reflect on the attributes of this great city that many of us take for granted. Over the past 100 years\, all the things we consider uniquely New York have been graphically presented in posters\, tempting an incredulous and eagerly-awaiting world to come and see the city that never sleeps.  \nJoin Poster House and Nicholas Lowry of Swann Auction Galleries as we view the historical\, promotional images that not only drove visitors to the city\, but delineated her amazing contours to countless others\, searing an indelible\, enviable image into the imaginative conscious of the world\, burnishing a mythology that New York City still generates today. \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Chinese Cooking Class with Nom Wah
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to once again partner with Nom Wah\, one of New York’s oldest dim sum houses\, in honor of the exhibition The Sleeping Giant: Posters & The Chinese Economy. Tune in to this live cooking event where Nom Wah’s chefs will guide you through two authentic Chinese recipes highlighted in their upcoming cookbook The Nom Wah Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from 100 Years at New York City’s Iconic Dim Sum Restaurant. \nTonight’s menu will include crafting Nom Wah’s scrumptious Rice Rolls and Roast Pork Buns. A complete ingredient list is noted below. \nPlease note that due to copyright restrictions\, this event will not be recorded or available for view after the live event. \n**For the scallion/cilantro Rice Rolls\, Nom Wah is offering pre-packaged kits that feed two. Kits can be ordered online or by emailing catering@nomwah.com by Friday\, August 21. They will be available for pickup at Nom Wah Nolita (10 Kenmare Street). Delivery can also be arranged for Manhattan (up to 125th Steet) and LIC/Brooklyn (between Bushwick and Park Slope) on either August 25 or 26.** \n\nRICE ROLLS \nRequired Cooking Equipment: \n• Steamer setup\n• Flat metal tray or plate which can fit inside steamer\n• Bench scraper or metal spatula \nFor the Rice Rolls: \n1 ½ Cup rice flour\n3 Tbsp tapioca starch\n1 Tbsp wheat starch\n1 Tbsp potato starch\n½ tsp Kosher salt\n½ Cup canola oil (or other neutral oil) \nFor Rice Roll Sauce: \n2 tsp light brown sugar\n2 Tbsp regular soy sauce\n2 Tbsp oyster sauce (substitute sweet soy sauce or hoisin sauce)\n½ Cup water \nOptional Fillings: \n2 Tbsp sliced scallions\n2 Tbsp fresh picked cilantro\n½ pound cleaned and peeled shrimp (substitute for minced roast pork or chicken) \nHOUSE SPECIAL ROAST PORK BUNS \nRequired Cooking Equipment: \n• Steamer setup\n• Medium rimmed pot \nFor the Bao Dough: **(for instructions on making the dough in advance of the class\, please see end of listing)** \n1 tsp active dry yeast\n1 ½ Cup warm water\n3 Cup all-purpose flour\n6 Tbsp sugar\n2 Tbsp canola oil (or other neutral oil)\n1 ½ tsp baking powder \nFor the Char Siu Filling: \n1 Tbsp canola oil (or other neutral oil)\n⅔ Cup minced white onion\n2 Tbsp white sugar\n2 Tbsp light soy sauce\n3 Tbsp oyster sauce\n4 tsp toasted sesame oil\n4 tsp dark soy sauce\n3 Cups chopped char siu (substitute for diced roast chicken or diced roast pork)\n1 tsp cornstarch\n2 Tbsp water \nIf you are going to cook along with the live class\, please prepare the bao dough in advance: \n\nIn the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment\, sift the flour and sugar. Add yeast and baking powder.\nAdd the water and oil slowly while mixing on the lowest speed until a smooth dough ball forms (1-2 min). You can do this by hand without a mixer\, but it will take longer.\nCover the dough with a damp cloth and let rest for approx. 2 hours\, until it doubles in size. This is a great time to prepare the bao filling!\nTurn the dough out onto a flat surface and gently knead by hand until the dough becomes smooth again (approx. 5 min). If the dough is dry\, add 1 to 2 tsp. water. Cover with a damp cloth and let rest for another 15 min.\nWhile the dough rests\, lay out ten flattened cupcake liners (you can also use a large piece of parchment paper cut into ten 4×4 inch squares). These are your boa coasters.\nTo make the buns\, roll the dough into a tube approx. 2 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 to 2 feet long\, and divide it into 10 equal pieces. This should be done right before the stat of class.\nReroll each piece of dough into a disc about 4 1/2 inches in diameter and about 1/4 inch thick. They should be thicker in the center and thinner around the edges. Cover with a damp towel.\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Thinking Outside The Grid: Social Design & Community Education\, Pt. 1
DESCRIPTION:This event is sponsored by Creative Reaction Lab. \nThe first of a two-part student series\, this event will delve into the history of design as it relates to community organizing\, the visual language behind powerful consciousness-raising designs\, and the ways in which social media changes how we encounter\, value\, and communicate information. Hear from Rafael Esquer\, Creative Director and CEO at Alfalfa New York\, Matt Massara\, graphic designer and illustrator\, and Antionette Carroll\, President and CEO of Creative Reaction Lab\, in conversation with Poster House’s Chief Curator Angelina Lippert as we tackle the evolving mediums and functions of design. \nRafael Esquer is the Creative Director and CEO at Alfalfa New York. He received his BFA in graphic design from Art Center College of Design and has lived in Manhattan since 1996. A native of the Sonora desert of Mexico\, Esquer established Alfalfa New York on November 1 (Day of the Dead) in order to emphasize its connection to the rich tradition of Mexican graphic arts. He is the designer behind NYC’s “Dial 311” brand identity. \nMatt Massara is a graphic designer and illustrator currently based out of Charleston\, South Carolina\, known on Instagram as @broccoli__boy. He holds a BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design and is currently a freelance graphic designer. Before moving to Charleston\, he was a lead designer at A&R creative group\, an in house design studio for a restaurant group in Columbus\, OH. Massara also works heavily in screen printing and hand illustration. \nAntionette Carroll is the President and CEO of Creative Reaction Lab\, a nonprofit educating and deploying youth to challenge racial and health inequities impacting Black and Latinx populations. Within this role\, Antionette has pioneered an award-winning form of creative problem solving called Equity-Centered Community Design (named a Fast Company World Changing Idea Finalist). Creative Reaction Lab was founded in support of the Uprising in Ferguson. Today\, Creative Reaction Lab is building a youth-led\, community-centered movement of a new type of Civic Leader: Redesigners for Justice. Creative Reaction Lab’s mission combines education and civic engagement for racial justice & healthy living. Creative Reaction Lab’s work is based on the belief that systems of oppression\, inequality\, inequity are by design; therefore\, they can and must be redesigned. \nAngelina Lippert is the Chief Curator of Poster House in New York City\, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the history of the poster. She holds an MA in the art of the Russian Avant-Garde from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London\, and a BA in Theology and Art History from Smith College. She is a contributing writer to The Muse by the Clio Awards\, where she focuses on the history of advertising design\, and is an editor for Vintage Poster magazine. \nCollege Night aims to provide real resources to students who are interested in pursuing careers in art\, design\, and museums\, with an emphasis on breaking down the pathways and barriers that can intimidate young professionals when planning for their futures. Our student programming provides professional development opportunities such as a lecture series of museum professionals across departments and throughout the world of design\, as well as creative workshops\, resumé reviews\, and direct mentorship with our museum staffers. \nCollege Night moved online in March of 2020\, and is free of charge. SUMMARY:Ask A Curator Day
DESCRIPTION:For the past ten years\, museum curators around the world have come together for this annual one-day event where members of the public can take to social media and ask a curator everything and anything. \nPoster House’s Chief Curator\, Angelina Lippert\, will be joining in the fun this year\, providing content on our Instagram Stories and Twitter feeds. \nAsk a Curator\, was the brainchild of Jim Richardson\, founder of MuseumNext\, a conference on the future of museums. The idea was that a curious public would be able to question the keepers of cultural heritage about the objects in their care and what it is they do with them.

Our collection is accessible without charge to scholars and students for research purposes\, as well as digitally to the entire world once our virtual database launches in 2021. Poster House will also incorporate images of these posters into lectures and public programs\, and consider them for future exhibitions at the museum and like-minded institutions.  \nWe will be accepting in-person submissions (please do not mail us submissions) at the museum on October 17\, between 12 and 3pm. \n\n\nWe will be accepting in-person submissions (please do not mail us submissions) at the museum on October 17\, 12–3pm. We will aim to accession the widest array of voices and design styles chosen out of the submissions. SUMMARY:Poster Inspiration: A Virtual Night With Anna Sui
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to present an evening with fashion design icon Anna Sui as she discusses how posters have inspired some of her most dynamic and beautiful collections. A native of Detroit\, Anna Sui’s work translated photography\, music\, pop culture\, and art history into effervescent designs for women who embraced eclectic chic and rockstar beauty. She was recently honored with a retrospective at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC which will be traveling to NSU Ft. Lauderdale in February\, and her runway shows\, with their creative visuals\, unexpected interactive moments\, and brilliant soundtracks continue to excite fashion lovers around the world. Tonight\, she will be focusing on how posters from the 1960s and 70s have influenced and inspired her work. \nAnna Sui is one of New York’s most beloved and accomplished fashion designers\, known for creating contemporary original clothing inspired by spectacular amounts of research into vintage styles and cultural arcana. Sui joined New York’s intensely creative cultural underground in the 1970s\, forging important relationships in the worlds of fashion\, photography\, art\, music\, and design. \nA first-generation Chinese American\, Anna Sui came of age in a suburb of Detroit. Her career is a classic American success story. “You have to focus on your dreams\, even if they go beyond common sense. How could this young girl from the suburbs of Detroit become a success in New York? It was always that dream\,” she says. Sui was part of a generation of fashion designers who remade American style in the 1990s. She rejected 1980s power dressing\, with its corporate suits and big shoulder pads\, in favor of a more relaxed silhouette that reflected the values of youth culture. \nSince her premiere runway show in 1991\, Sui has produced eighty-four collections\, and she remains at the helm of her independent brand. Her label has grown to include accessories\, cosmetics and fragrance\, and she operates boutiques in the United States and Asia. A passionate advocate for New York’s Garment District\, she has located her business and produced her fashion lines here in New York City for the past thirty-eight years. \nPhoto by Joshua Jordan \nTickets: $5\nMembers & Students: Free!

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of West Village Neon
DESCRIPTION:Due to the success of our Walking Tour of Historic Chinatown Signage\, Poster House is partnering again with design historian Thomas Rinaldi as he guides you on this 90-minute walking tour of the West Village. \nGreenwich Village is blessed with an especially dense concentration of vintage neon signs. Signs like these advertised businesses large and small throughout the city beginning in the 1920s and 1930s. They fell out of favor in the 1960s due to rising costs\, restrictive zoning ordinances\, and the appearance of less costly forms of outdoor advertising. In recent years\, they have all but disappeared as old\, independent businesses across the city have succumbed to rent hikes and old age. This tour will take us past about a dozen signs dating to the 1930s\, 40s and 50s\, marking the locations of some of the neighborhood’s most stalwart restaurants\, bars\, and small businesses. We will see them at dusk\, as they start to come to light and when they look their best.  Some have been beautifully restored; all are in perpetual danger of disappearing.  We will discuss their materials\, design\, origins and future. \nThomas Rinaldi is the co-author of the book Hudson Valley Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of an American Landscape\, published by the University Press of New England in 2006\, and the author of New York Neon\, published by W.W. Norton in 2012. His photographs have been published in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Post\, The New York Observer\, Westchester Magazine\, CNN Online\, and elsewhere\, and have been exhibited at the Municipal Art Society of New York and at the New York State Museum in Albany. \nNOTE: This tour does NOT begin at Poster House. You will be emailed the starting location one week before the event. Guests should be prepared to walk on uneven\, crowded streets for 90 minutes without seating. \nIn the event of rain\, the walking tour will take place on November 17.
