SUMMARY:Colonial Dreams to Fascist Empire
DESCRIPTION:Colonial Dreams to Fascist Empire: Italian Aggression\, Ethiopian Resistance in the 19th & 20th Centuries \nDespite the significance and international impact of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935–37 in the lead-up to World War II\, its history is not widely known. In this talk\, Dr. David B. Spielman will examine the historical context behind the Second Italian War of Aggression\, and Italy’s subsequent occupation of Ethiopia from 1935 to 1941. In particular\, he will address the history of Italian colonialism in the Horn of Africa and Ethiopian anti-colonial and anti-facist resistance.  \nDr. David B. Spielman is an Assistant Professor of premodern/early modern history of the Horn of Africa at NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study. His focus is on the premodern/early modern Christian Kingdoms of Ethiopia\, but his research interests also include Ethiopian/Eritrean Ge’ez literature\, Ethiopian/Eritrean religion and theology\, Horn of Africa manuscript cultures\, law\, African history\, global history and more. He earned his PhD in History from UCLA and is currently working on his first book which examines the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the law of the Kingdom of Ethiopia in the 15th–19th centuries.  \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. DESCRIPTION:Female Trailblazers: A Special Members-Only Series \nIn honor of the exhibition Utopia in Our Time: The Posters of Molly Crabapple\, Poster House members are invited to explore the creative work of female trailblazers both past and present.  \nThis tour takes place at Grolier Club located at 47 East 60th Street. New York\, NY 10022.  \nPaper Jane marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen (1775–1817). Although Austen is among the best-known authors in the English language after Shakespeare\, this was not always the case. When she died at the early age of 41\, she was relatively unknown\, having published only four novels anonymously (“by a Lady”). Yet her wit and biting social commentary have endured to captivate and inspire across generations.   \nThe exhibition is organized chronologically\, measuring the novelist’s growing fame at fifty-year intervals (1825\, 1875\, 1925\, 1975\, and 2025) through a kaleidoscopic mix of 110 objects\, including rare first editions\, manuscripts\, popular reprintings\, movie posters\, illustrations\, theater playbills\, and other paper ephemera. \n  \nAccessibility Note: As this is an off-site event\, masks and clear masks are available free of charge with prior notification. Guests are encouraged to bring their own supplies; however\, if you do not have materials\, fear not! Limited supplies will also be available for general use.  \nTicket price includes one complimentary beverage\, with a cash bar available for additional purchases.  \nDame Cuchifrita is a regular fixture in New York City’s neo-burlesque movement\, and is known for her surprising storytelling\, generally accompanied by gorgeous sets and costumes that reflect her work as a visual artist and fashion designer. A regular feature at Dr. Sketchy’s\, she has also modeled at the Society of Illustrators and at Poster House\, creating animated and character-based poses to inspire and titillate in performances incorporating improvisation and dramatic costumes and props. Dame Cuchifrita can also be found working hard as a menswear designer during the day and as a semi-professional cook and baker on the weekends. \nRobin Mork is an illustrator and educator\, teaching design and the creative process at Queens College and St. John’s University\, as well as a variety of workshops at Poster House. She is an avid on location and live drawing artist\, with a strong interest in gesture and materials exploration. DESCRIPTION:Molly Crabapple has traveled the world\, from active war zones to underground subcultures and the front lines of political protest\, to draw moments of rebellion. During her stint as resident artist at The Box in New York City\, she documented the culture of hedonism that predated the financial crash\, both satirizing the one percent and capturing the humanity of the dancers and workers who served them. This “artistic coming-of-age” led her to play a formative role in the Occupy Wall Street movement\, where she served as both artist and organizer; to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base\, where she sketched military commission hearings; to protests in Puerto Rico; autonomous zones in Greece; and the Ukraine under Russian bombs. \nAs she bridges the gap between art and politics\, Crabapple has been likened to an artistic version of the politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—going from model and muse to “the millennial generation’s first great radical artist.” But even as she documents the human face of social change\, Crabapple never loses track of the essential desires that drive it\, seeking out spaces that merge radical politics with the pursuit of pleasure\, community care\, and free expression. From the anarchist bikers providing hurricane relief to the queer nightlife communities keeping the spirit of New York alive at the Chelsea Hotel\, she captures the people carrying this spirit forward amidst global turmoil. \nTonight\, she joins sex and nightlife reporter Camille Sojit Pejcha to discuss the revolutionary potential of partying—and how political rebellion\, sexuality\, and freedom of expression have always been intertwined. Together\, they turn their attention toward the importance of spaces that exist outside of what artist and author Sophia Giovannitti terms “Empire Time”: carving out pockets of freedom within a capitalist system\, and with them\, creating the possibility of alternative futures. \nTicket price includes one complimentary beverage in our Café. \nMolly Crabapple is an artist and writer based in New York. DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Waugh’s poster campaign for the National Park Service (NPS) during the depths of the Great Depression was as trailblazing as it was masterful. The government had never before entrusted such an ambitious promotion to a solo designer\, let alone a female modernist working in a male-dominated bureaucracy. Yet Waugh’s work for the bureau was just one of the many successful\, diverse careers she pursued during her long life. Held in honor of the exhibition Blazing a Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters\, this lecture by noted historian and curator Mark Resnick will focus on her NPS campaign\, as well as situate it within her broader story.  \nMark Resnick is an authority on the history of American graphic design\, a field in which he curates\, publishes\, and lectures. He has also served as an art-museum director\, as chief business and legal executive at major film companies\, and on various arts-related boards. DESCRIPTION:Every month\, Poster House offers Vibrant Verbal Description Tours specifically for community members who are blind or have low vision. In order to reach a wide\, art-loving audience around the world\, we offer our description tours both in person and online through Zoom. These tours are given by our Lead Educators\, allowing you intimate access to the works in the museum’s current shows and in the permanent collection. \nThis month’s virtual tour will focus on the exhibition Blazing A Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters.  \nPlease email access@posterhouse.org or call (914) 295-2387 to sign up for this event. You will be emailed poster images for reference as well as information about accessing Zoom the day before the virtual tour. Tours start promptly and will last approximately 60 minutes with questions. \nFor a complete list of our accessibility tours\, click the Accessibility filter at the top of our Events page\, email access@posterhouse.org\, or call (914) 295-2387. Poster House will also strive to accommodate any outside accessibility tour requests given two week’s notice. \nAccessibility Note: This online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees’ cameras off. A recording of this event will be made available to all registered attendees. Automated closed captioning will be provided. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is available upon request.
