SUMMARY:Designed to Control: Authoritarian Branding of the 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Youth may be wasted on the young\, but under the totalitarian state they saw naivety and enthusiasm of youth as a particular opportunity. For the state to prosper\, youth was treated as a sub-brand of the greater regime that both followed and perpetuated its ideology. Graphic design\, typography\, officially sanctioned styles and fashions\, symbolism and signs played a huge role in transforming children and teenagers into functioning fascists\, indoctrinated in stages according to their age and level of cognitive development. Young people were given daily doses of visual\, written\, and verbal propaganda. The goal for the youth was to graduate to a higher rank within the system until compliant boys turned into loyal statesmen\, soldiers of the realm\, and promoters of the regime and girls into the mothers of the next generation of fascists.  \nIn honor of the exhibition The Future Was Then: The Changing Face of Fascist Italy\, prominent design historian Steven Heller will present a survey of this charged topic and address the design methods used to enforce conformity to various regimes’ authoritarian agendas. \nSteven Heller is the cofounder and cochair emeritus of MFA Design at the School of Visual Arts and editor-at-large at Printmag.com\, where he writes The Daily Heller. He is a former contributing columnist to the New York Times Book Review where he was also the senior art director. Heller is the author and/or editor of more than two hundred books on graphic design\, illustration\, and political art\, including Iron Fists: Branding the 20th Century Totalitarian State; Merz to Emigre and Beyond: Avant Garde Magazine Design of the Twentieth Century; and Growing Up Underground: A Memoir of Counterculture New York. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:First Friday: Pasta Poster Workshop with Lorenzo Fanton & Giulia Zoavo (Salotto.nyc)
DESCRIPTION:This one-hour workshop invites students to transform one of Italy’s most beloved cultural icons—pasta—into a source of visual inspiration. Each participant will choose a shape of pasta to work with and let its form\, texture\, and name spark ideas for a unique poster design. \nThrough hands-on experimentation with collage—using inks\, magazine cut-outs\, and colored paper—students will translate culinary shapes into bold graphic compositions. From the spirals of fusilli to the butterflies of farfalle\, here pasta becomes more than food: it becomes a visual language. \nBy the end of the session\, participants will have created an original poster that connects everyday Italian culture to personal creativity. The exercise celebrates pasta as a design catalyst—simple\, familiar\, and endlessly versatile. \nLorenzo Fanton (@lorenzofanton) is an Italian graphic designer\, art director\, and type designer based in New York City. With a practice spanning brand identity\, editorial\, and digital design\, he is recognized for translating complex ideas into clear\, type-driven systems and elegant visual narratives. His international experience—shaped at such studios as Pentagram\, Collins\, Ogilvy & Mather\, The Partners\, Siegel+Gale\, The Glue Society\, and Fabrica—has led to collaborations with Ferrari\, Taschen\, Netflix\, AGBO\, NBC\, Warner Records\, Riot Games\, and Polyvinyl\, among others. Awarded by the Type Directors Club\, SPD\, and ADC\, Lorenzo continues to balance research and intuition in building concept-driven work. \nGiulia Zoavo (@giuliazoavo) is an Italian-born multidisciplinary designer and visual artist based in New York City who tells complex stories with simple shapes—and sometimes with words too. She has collaborated with a wide range of clients and agencies\, including Sagmeister & Walsh\, BBDO\, AHOY Studios\, the New York Times\, and Rizzoli. Giulia is one of the cofounders of Salotto\, a hub for cultural research and production led by Italian creative professionals in Brooklyn. Her work has been recognized by American Illustration\, 3×3 Magazine\, The One Club for Creativity\, Illustri Festival in Vicenza\, and PRINT Magazine. She is currently the Senior Content Visual Designer at Adobe. \nSupplies are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. This program is suitable for visitors  age 15 and older. \nThis program is presented by Poster House’s CMYK Council\, the museum’s BIPOC advisory board that works to ensure the museum is accessible to communities of color. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:Spanish-language Tour of Blazing A Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters
DESCRIPTION:Join Poster House for a Spanish-language tour of Blazing A Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters. \nDorothy Waugh\, whose posters encouraging Americans to travel to the National Parks during the New Deal era have often been overlooked\, effectively transformed the image of these officially protected landscapes. Between 1934 and 1936\, she designed 17 bold posters that gave the National Park Service its own style\, one that clearly distinguished it from those of the railroad companies that dominated domestic travel advertising at the time. Her groundbreaking work marked a turning point in American graphic design\, and on this tour you’ll get a close look at the entire series along with archival materials that reveal the story behind their creation. \n  \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request.
