SUMMARY:We Tried To Warn You! Exhibition Talk at the Clark
DESCRIPTION:For the last half-century\, artists and designers all over the world over have sought to express the urgency of environmental issues in graphic terms—and to spark action. Tim Medland\, curator of the current exhibition at Poster House in New York\, We Tried to Warn You!\, joins Clark curator of contemporary projects\, Robert Wiesenberger\, for an introduction to the exhibition and a conversation about what it might take to get the message across. \nThis event takes place at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute\, located at 225 South St\, Williamstown\, MA 01267.

SUMMARY:In Their Own Words: Art Deco Architects Speak
DESCRIPTION:The great Art Deco skyscrapers—the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building—were designed by socially prominent architects\, often of old New York stock. But a generation of lesser-known architects and builders—new to the profession and often new to the country—helped spread the Deco style across the more modest\, but also more numerous\, middle-class landscapes of the city\, from the Garment District to the Grand Concourse. In the late 1970s and early 1980s\, Anthony W. Robins had the good fortune to meet and interview three of those architects\, and he recorded the interviews. \nThe three architects––Israel Crausman\, Louis Allen Abramson\, and Marvin Fine––came from varying backgrounds. This program  explores the work of these architects—three of the dozens who helped transform the face of New York City in the 1920s and ‘30s—through their own words. In addition to Robins’s commentary\, participants will hear the architects describe their buildings\, their experiences\, and their inspirations. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees’ cameras off.  Automatic closed captioning will be provided. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is available upon request with two weeks notice — please email access@posterhouse.org to request interpretation services.\nA recording of this event will be made available for all registered attendees.\nQuestions about accessibility? Please contact Sarit Cahana\, Access Coordinator\, at access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387‬.\nFor all other event related questions\, please contact info@posterhouse.org

SUMMARY:Natural Dye Block Printing with Misa Chhan
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to welcome artist and printing expert Misa Chhan for a hands-on workshop exploring the world of natural dyes inspired by the acclaimed exhibition We Tried to Warn You! Environmental Crisis Posters\, 1970–2020. Over the course of this two-day workshop\, participants will learn the techniques of mordanting (preparing fabric to accept color) as well as block printing with natural dyes. Attendees will leave with their dyed work\, as well as the knowledge to replicate the process on their own and a greater understanding of the science behind natural dye printing techniques. Workshop price includes all materials;space is limited. \nMisa Chhan is a Los Angeles-based artist who works with natural dyes\, textiles\, printmaking\, and artist’s books. Her background in book arts\, papermaking\, and natural fibers led her to explore natural dyes and fibers as a medium to engage with and learn from the natural world. Through her art practice\, Chhan aims to create a container of pure joy to demonstrate our fundamental interdependence with nature\, thereby challenging the extractive mindset of domination. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:Black History is Poster History
DESCRIPTION:From 1967 to 1980\, Emory Douglas served as the official Revolutionary Artist and then Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party (BPP).  In these positions\, he art directed\, designed\, and created most of the illustrations—including the back page posters—for the Black Panther newspaper\, spreading the Party’s message around the country if not the world. Almost sixty years later\, he continues to advocate for securing what the Black Panther Party outlined in its famous ten-point program: “land\, bread\, justice\, housing\, and peace” for all people. By creating new posters as well as remixing and updating some from the Black Panther newspaper\, Douglas maintains “All Power to the People” as his enduring graphic legacy. \nColette Gaiter is a Professor in the Departments of Africana Studies and Art & Design at the University of Delaware. After working in graphic design in New York City\, she became an educator\, artist\, and writer. Her visual work\, exhibited internationally\, covers a range of media and forms\, including artist books. Since 2005\, she writes about former Black Panther artist Emory Douglas’s work\, including his current international human rights artist activism. Her essays on his work appear in Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas (for which she wrote introductions to the 2014 edition and current third edition)\, and other books and publications. The 2022 book The Black Experience in Design includes her interview with Emory Douglas and an essay on evolving visual literacy. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees’ cameras off.  Automatic closed captioning will be provided. SUMMARY:Ebony It Girls: Black Women's Fashion of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:An “It Girl” is a woman who defines the fashion\, culture\, and beauty of an era. During the early twentieth century\, popular Black stage and screen performers defined Black women as fashion symbols. From Josephine Baker’s banana skirt to Florence Mills’s perfectly shaped bob\, the Black female performer embodied sensuality\, elegance\, and beauty despite widespread anti-Blackness that had stripped these women of their humanity only decades prior. Black female performers were propelled to the status of celebrity by way of prioritizing and valuing fashion and dress. \nThis hybrid event will discuss the most notable performers of the 1920s and ‘30s who set out to define Black womanhood as assertive\, beautiful\, and sensual. \nEs-pranza Humphrey is a historian of Black studies and museum educator based out of New York. She received her BA in History from the University of New Haven and her MA in American Studies from Columbia University. Her research has incorporated interdisciplinary approaches to spotlight the Black feminine identity expressed through various forms of performance art. Her latest research endeavors focus on the history of fashion as activism for Black women in the 20th century. She is currently the Assistant Curator of Collections at Poster House
