SUMMARY:Dafi Kühne: Letterpress Posters Reinvented
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning designer and printer Dafi Kühne is joining Chief Curator Angelina Lippert in conversation to present his work\, share his approach to Swiss Typography\, and give insight into his fascinating production process. Together they will ask: Do printed posters in times of digital displays in urban spaces still make sense? And why should posters be produced at great expense using the antiquated letterpress printing process\, when digital printing devices can deliver high-quality reproductions at much lower cost? In the words of Dafi\, “letterpress printing can only live on if the design is at the heart of the process and makes the connection to the present.” \nThis event is presented by Cooper Union’s Herb Lubalin Study Center and the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York. It will be held at the Frederick P. Rose Auditorium. \nDafi Kühne is a Swiss designer and letterpress printer. In his studio\, he uses a wild mix of analog and digital tools to produce cultural posters. With this one main rule in his studio\, “No PDF ever leaves the studio as a final product.” He prints all posters with letterpress printing presses. His mostly typographic posters have won international awards and been in exhibitions all around the globe.

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Black Power
DESCRIPTION:The Black Panther Party helped brand the Black Power movement through the use of posters\, prints\, and the organization’s iconic newspaper. These efforts extended beyond the use of such ephemera to encompass attire and an overall attitude that emphasized the cause. This cohesive visual identity communicated its bold\, militant values to the general public\, and was specifically inspiring to a Black audience. Poster House is thrilled to welcome Mary Philips\, Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Lehman College and Jonathan Square\, Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design to discuss the importance of demanding change through aesthetic presentation. This discussion will focus on the outward presentation of Black Panther Party members and consider the stakes involved in their militant stance when interacting with the State. \nMary Frances Phillips is a proud native of Detroit\, Michigan. She is an Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Lehman College\, City University of New York. Her interdisciplinary research agenda focuses on race and gender in post-1945 social movements and the carceral state. Her research areas include the Modern Black Freedom Struggle\, Black Feminism\, and Black Power Studies. She is currently working on her book manuscript\, Sister Love: Ericka Huggins\, Spiritual Wellness\, and the Black Panther Party\, which is under contract with New York University Press. This project is the first and only scholarly monograph on the life experiences of Black Panther veteran Ericka Huggins. \nDr. Jonathan Michael Square is the Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design. He was previously a lecturer in the Committee on Degree in History and Literature at Harvard University and a fellow in the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The recipient of numerous fellowships and grants\, Dr. Square’s work considers histories of enslavement through the lens of fashion\, and his research has appeared in numerous scholarly and public-facing venues. Currently\, he is working on a book manuscript tentatively titled Negro Cloth: How Slavery Birthed the American Fashion Industry. Beyond Past Is Present\, He has curated exhibitions at Harvard University and is currently curating another exhibition at Winterthur Museum\, Garden\, and Library. Follow his scholarly work at @fashioningtheself on Instagram. \nThis program is presented in person at Poster House. Automatic closed captioning will be provided. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is available upon request with two weeks notice—please email access@posterhouse.org to request interpretation services. SUMMARY:Chanoyu Tea Ceremony with Yoshitsugu Nagano
DESCRIPTION:Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art features vivid colors and bold compositions representative of 20th-century Japanese design trends. This style is in sharp contrast to the traditional wabi aesthetic\, characterized by a natural forms and simple shapes. The wabi aesthetic can be observed in chanoyu\, a tea ceremony that developed from the spirituality of Zen. Through the act of making and drinking powdered green tea\, it aims to unite the minds of those gathered in the tea room\, to calm the thoughts and to look deeply into oneself and each other in silence. \nThis 800+ year-old practice  traditionally takes place in a dimly lit tea room with utensils based on subdued colors and a respect for natural textures. Four hundred years ago\, however\, the warrior tea master Furuta Oribe revolutionized the monochrome world of the tea ceremony by bringing in color and light. Opening up the tea room with windows\, utensils took on a more elevated role\, embracing green and other hues that introduced the  colorful world of chanoyu. \nPoster House is pleased to welcome New York-based tea master Yoshitsugu Nagano for a tea ceremony situated within the world of chanoy that has been handed down from Oribe. This special tea room space will be designed by actively incorporating the colors and composition of 20th-century Japanese posters featured in Made in Japan. \nParticipants will get to enjoy a cup of powdered green tea prepared exclusively for this special experience of Japanese culture.  \nYoshitsugu Nagano is the youngest person to be certified in the highest rank of the Ueda Soko school of samurai tea ceremony (USRJWT)\, which has been practiced in Hiroshima for 400 years\, and serves as a regular professor of the school. In 2019\, he relocated to New York City\, where he energetically promotes the spirituality and aesthetics of chanoyu through hosting tea rituals both for public audience and by special arrangement\, presenting workshops\, and teaching his students. He establishes styles of modern tea\, incorporating new expressions into this tradition rooted in Zen.

SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Kyohei Inukai
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at Japan Society are inviting Poster House Members to an exclusive\, curator-led tour of their exhibition Kyohei Inukai. \nFeaturing over 100 works from the late 1960s through the 1980s\, Kyohei Inukai marks the most extensive exhibition to date by the largely unknown\, yet prolific\, Japanese-American artist Kyohei Inukai (1913–85). With nearly all the works on view to the public for the first time\, this rare presentation offers an unparalleled window into Inukai’s exploratory approach to material\, line\, and space—as seen through his abstract oil paintings\, playful screenprints and brooding sumi-e (ink paintings). \n

SUMMARY:An Attack Against One is an Attack Against All: From Civil Rights to Black Power
DESCRIPTION:The civil rights movement and the Black Power movement are often presented as discrete and\, at times\, antithetical campaigns. While these separate approaches relied on different tactics and strategies\, both were effective in securing fundamental human rights for Black people in America and have more in common than is generally recognized. Both addressed their audiences through powerful imagery and accessible visual language\, thereby galvanizing the masses.  \nPoster House is pleased to partner with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights for this panel discussion on the impact of these overlapping but divergent movements\, with special attention paid to the role of visual communication for each radical strategy.  \nThis program is presented in-person and live-streamed for our virtual audience.

SUMMARY:Comrade Sisters Panel & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:The role of women in the Black Panther Party has historically gone unacknowledged. It’s estimated that six out of ten Panther Party members were women. While regularly making headlines agitating\, protesting\, and organizing\, these remarkable women were also building communities and enacting social justice\, providing food\, housing\, education\, healthcare\, and more to the people. Comrade Sisters is their story.   \nJoin women of the New York Chapter of the Black Panther Party\, Yasmeen Majid and Claudia Chesson-Williams\, and Comrade Sisters co-author and photographer\, Stephen Shames\, in conversation about their Black Panther Party experiences and life after the BPP. Book signing to follow.
