Afterward\, guest curator Tim Medland will talk about his show breaking down the ways in which Allied countries warned of espionage during World War II.  \n5:30pm How to Read a Poster with Melissa Walker $25\nPosters are designed to communicate a message clearly and quickly\, and\, as such\, are naturally easy to read. Poster connoisseurs\, however\, observe elements and references that the general public may miss. Join Collections Manager Melissa Walker for an in-depth tutorial on how to read a poster\, featuring posters from upcoming exhibitions and the Poster House Permanent Collection. Inspired by the exhibition Masked Vigilantes on Silent Motorbikes\, in which artists use addition\, subtraction\, and multiplication to alter posters into new works of art\, teens will create their own holiday-themed papier-mâché collages on mason jar candle holders. These bright\, festive lanterns will make great personalized gifts!  \nPH x Teens: One Bright Night is a drop-in program for young adults ages 13 to 18. Advanced registration is encouraged\, but participants are not expected to stay the entire time; guests should plan to spend about an hour on this interactive\, self-guided activity. \n

DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to welcome military poster expert Mel Meehan in conversation with guest curator Tim Medland on the acclaimed exhibition With My Little Eye: Warnings from the Homefront. This program will cover propaganda posters from around the world produced during World War II that explore the theme of espionage and its risks. Ranging from chilling to cheeky\, these images showcase how each of the Allied countries took a different approach to warning its citizens of spies.  Questions Strongly encouraged!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. DESCRIPTION:Alas\, the Maharaja’s tour with Poster House is ending\, and the Rogue will take his final bows. While we’ve come to love his charming\, mischievous\, and exuberant personality\, there’s still more to be discovered about this beloved mascot. Join historian and author Manu S. Pillai as he delves into the history of India’s maharajas\, revealing the political complexities behind the character. Stories of sedition\, secret political alliances\, and espionage will have you asking if the stereotypes of the Maharajas were ever valid. \nManu S Pillai is the author of the award-winning The Ivory Throne (2015)\, Rebel Sultans (2018)\, The Courtesan\, The Mahatma & The Italian Brahmin (2019)\, and\, most recently\, False Allies (2021). Besides working with parliamentarians in India and the United Kingdom\, he has also been a researcher with the BBC on its “Incarnations” history series. A winner of the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar–awarded by India’s National Academy of Letters to young writers\, he has been a newspaper columnist and contributor to multiple publications in India. Manu recently completed his PhD at King’s College London.  \nThis hybrid event will take place over Zoom. It will be simultaneously screened in the museum’s workshop space where a selection of Indian snacks and tea will be served.

SUMMARY:Gesture Drawing Class
DESCRIPTION:Gesture drawing is a technique that aims to capture fluidity and motion\, infusing illustrations with a greater sense of life and vitality. In this class\, instructor and illustrator Robin Mork will share methods of working quickly and lightly to capture fluid gesture and moving figures using both charcoal and brush and ink. Afterward\, attendees will be invited to apply their new skills to illustrate a live dance performance in the museum’s Main Gallery. \nRobin Mork is a Brooklyn-based illustrator and book cover designer\, and an adjunct assistant professor of illustration and design at CUNY Queens College. She has a BA from Smith College and an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. Clients include Simon & Schuster\, JP Morgan Chase\, and Columbia University\, among others.

SUMMARY:Anchor in Continuum Dance Performance
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to welcome dancer and choreographer Shira Kagan-Shafman and violinist and composer Leandria Lott for a new performance piece created in conversation with the exhibition Masked Vigilantes on Silent Motorbikes. Much like the acclaimed exhibition\, this production blurs the boundaries among multiple artistic mediums. Together\, the pair will explore the tension between the inevitability of change and the permanence of time\, allowing viewers to experience a Poster House exhibition in a new and engaging way. \nShira Kagan-Shafman (she/her) is a dancer and choreographer based in New York City. In 2021\, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Dance from The New School and spent time in Israel participating in DanceJerusalem and Batsheva Dance Company’s Summer Course for outstanding dance students. She has performed professionally in works by Caitlin Corbett\, Kelley Donovan\, Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp\, Peggy Florin\, Dean Moss\, Rebecca Stenn\, Jess Pretty\, Mariana Valencia\, and Joanna Kotze. Additionally\, she participated in the Arts on Site Residency and Retreat\, developing her work To Breathe Over Seas that premiered at Arts on Site in December 2021 and was restaged in March 2022.Currently\, Kagan-Shafman works for Ephrat Asherie Dance. \nLeandria Lott (she/they) is a Brooklyn-based\, multi-faceted musician\, teacher\, composer\, and artist. Their passion has ignited her to explore music around the world. She has performed and participated in workshops and classes in the United Kingdom and Italy\, and has toured The Virgin Islands. She has also performed with Stevie Wonder and Kirk Franklin. They work with Arts on Site as a Community Leader\, and they are on the board of B.R.I.D.G.E Orchestra\, a hip hop orchestra based in Brooklyn\, where they act as the Marketing Manager.
