SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Kyohei Inukai
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at Japan Society are inviting Poster House Members to an exclusive\, curator-led tour of their exhibition Kyohei Inukai. \nFeaturing over 100 works from the late 1960s through the 1980s\, Kyohei Inukai marks the most extensive exhibition to date by the largely unknown\, yet prolific\, Japanese-American artist Kyohei Inukai (1913–85). With nearly all the works on view to the public for the first time\, this rare presentation offers an unparalleled window into Inukai’s exploratory approach to material\, line\, and space—as seen through his abstract oil paintings\, playful screenprints and brooding sumi-e (ink paintings). \n

SUMMARY:An Attack Against One is an Attack Against All: From Civil Rights to Black Power
DESCRIPTION:The civil rights movement and the Black Power movement are often presented as discrete and\, at times\, antithetical campaigns. While these separate approaches relied on different tactics and strategies\, both were effective in securing fundamental human rights for Black people in America and have more in common than is generally recognized. Both addressed their audiences through powerful imagery and accessible visual language\, thereby galvanizing the masses.  \nPoster House is pleased to partner with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights for this panel discussion on the impact of these overlapping but divergent movements\, with special attention paid to the role of visual communication for each radical strategy.  \nThis program is presented in-person and live-streamed for our virtual audience.

Questions strongly encouraged! \nAvram Finkelstein is an artist\, writer\, and activist\, and a founding member of the Silence=Death and Gran Fury collectives. His work has shown at MoMA\, the Whitney Museum\, the Hirschhorn\, the Shed\, and the Metropolitan Museum\, and is in the permanent collections of MoMA\, the Whitney\, the New Museum\, the Metropolitan\, the Victoria and Albert Museum\, and the Brooklyn Museum. Comrade Sisters is their story.   \nJoin women of the New York Chapter of the Black Panther Party\, Yasmeen Majid and Claudia Chesson-Williams\, and Comrade Sisters co-author and photographer\, Stephen Shames\, in conversation about their Black Panther Party experiences and life after the BPP. SUMMARY:Survival Pending Revolution: A Conversation with Gayle Asali Dickson and Colette Gaiter
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to welcome artist and former Black Panther Party member\, Gayle Asali Dickson\, in conversation with design historian\, Colette Gaiter. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear about the lived experience of a BPP member at the height of the Party’s power\, with special attention paid to the leadership roles of women within the Party. Questions strongly encouraged! \nGayle “Asali” Dickson is an artist\, an ordained minister\, and a former member of the Black Panther Party from 1970–1976. During the art and culture Renaissance on the West Coast in the late 1960s\, the name “Asali” was given to her. Her worldview\, beginning in her formative years during the civil rights struggle of the 1950s\, is that of women and children. Under the pseudonym “Asali\,” she created vintage art drawings during the time she worked for the Black Panther Party’s newspaper (1972–1974). They consist mostly of women and children\, and the use of the “vote” was promoted as a tool for survival within a system of patriarchy. Her era in the Party was about implementing a vision of survival pending total change from an uncaring social system to one that cares for humanity. \nColette Gaiter is a Professor in the Departments of Africana Studies and Art & Design at the University of Delaware. After working in graphic design in New York City\, she became an educator\, artist\, and writer. Her visual work\, exhibited internationally\, covers a range of media and forms\, including artist books. Since 2005\, she writes about former Black Panther artist Emory Douglas’s work\, including his current international human rights artist activism. Her essays on his work appear in Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas (for which she wrote introductions to the 2014 edition and current third edition)\, and other books and publications. The 2022 book The Black Experience in Design includes her interview with Emory Douglas and an essay on evolving visual literacy. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees’ cameras off.  Automatic closed captioning will be provided. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is available upon request with two weeks notice — please email access@posterhouse.org to request interpretation services.\nA recording of this event will be made available for all registered attendees.\nQuestions about accessibility? SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Death Is Not the End
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is excited to offer an exclusive design-focused tour of Death Is Not the End at the Rubin Museum of Art\, led by exhibition designers Isometric Studios.  \nDeath Is Not the End is a cross-cultural exhibition that explores notions of death and afterlife through the art of Tibetan Buddhism and Christianity. During a time of great global turmoil\, loss\, and uncertainty\, the exhibition invites contemplation of the universal human condition of impermanence and the desire to continue to exist. \nThe exhibition features prints\, oil paintings\, bone ornaments\, thangka paintings\, sculptures\, illuminated manuscripts\, and ritual items\, and brings together 58 objects spanning 12 centuries from the Rubin Museum’s collection alongside artworks on loan from private collections and major institutions. \nThe exhibition is organized around three major themes: the Human Condition\, or the shared understanding of our mortality in this world; States In-Between\, or the concepts of limbo\, purgatory\, and bardo; and (After)life\, focusing on resurrection\, ideas of transformation\, and heaven. \nThis tour will take place at the Rubin Museum of Art\, located at 150 W 17th St\, New York\, NY 10011. \n
