DESCRIPTION:Join Poster House for a summer teacher workshop! Engage in a guided tour and Q&A session with Es-pranza Humphrey\, curator of the exhibition Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party. Afterward\, guests will participate in a hands-on artmaking workshop inspired by the work of Black Panther Minister of Culture\, Emory Douglas\, and learn more about protest posters from Black-led civil rights movements before and after the heydey of the Black Panther Party. Educators will leave with new ideas and strategies for integrating posters into their curricula\, along with classroom-ready materials from our Posters in Protest Educator Guide.  \nThis professional development workshop is geared towards K-12 teachers. Advanced registration is required and the program costs $20 (Educator Member discounts apply).  \nParticipants will receive 3 CTLE hours. Just Like Me shares stories of triumph and inspiration from eight visionary Black voices who\, against all odds\, made it to the top of their game and are now throwing a line to the next generation. \n6pm Memories of the Moon Dance Performance\nPoster House is pleased to host an exclusive performance of Memories of the Moon by Yu.S.Artistry. Inspired by the diary of a prisoner of a Japanese internment camp during World War II\, Memories of the Moon tells the story of how he logged the passage of time within his jail cell by counting the full moons. Don’t miss this powerful excerpt from a beautiful work of dance! \n7pm Josh Lawrence Jazz Performance\nPoster House is thrilled to welcome Josh Lawrence for a jazz quartet performance in celebration of his two latest albums\, And That Too and Call Time. Enjoy three different cocktails developed by this expert mixologist\, paired with an exclusive tour of the powerful exhibition led by Curator Es-pranza Humphrey! Come for the cocktails\, stay for the posters!  \nPoster House Members receive 20% off in-person events by entering their email address at check-out.  \nAndra ‘AJ’ Johnson is a 22-year restaurant industry veteran who has worked every position\, from dishwasher to managing partner. Whether fast casual or fine dining\, AJ has found her place and enriched her journey through this industry at some of DC’s mainstays\, such as Open City & The Diner\, Le Diplomate\, and Mussel Bar by Robert Weidmaier. She continues to renew her commitment to providing exemplary service and thoughtful cocktails each day at Serenata/Zumo in La Cosecha Latin Market in Northeast\, Washington\, DC. The need for diversity and representation in the Washington\, DC restaurant scene has inspired her forthcoming book White Plates\, Black Faces that continues her work of telling the stories of people of color in the restaurant industry. SUMMARY:Survival Pending Revolution: A Conversation with Gayle Asali Dickson and Colette Gaiter
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to welcome artist and former Black Panther Party member\, Gayle Asali Dickson\, in conversation with design historian\, Colette Gaiter. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear about the lived experience of a BPP member at the height of the Party’s power\, with special attention paid to the leadership roles of women within the Party. Questions strongly encouraged! \nGayle “Asali” Dickson is an artist\, an ordained minister\, and a former member of the Black Panther Party from 1970–1976. During the art and culture Renaissance on the West Coast in the late 1960s\, the name “Asali” was given to her. Her worldview\, beginning in her formative years during the civil rights struggle of the 1950s\, is that of women and children. Under the pseudonym “Asali\,” she created vintage art drawings during the time she worked for the Black Panther Party’s newspaper (1972–1974). They consist mostly of women and children\, and the use of the “vote” was promoted as a tool for survival within a system of patriarchy. Her era in the Party was about implementing a vision of survival pending total change from an uncaring social system to one that cares for humanity. \nColette Gaiter is a Professor in the Departments of Africana Studies and Art & Design at the University of Delaware. After working in graphic design in New York City\, she became an educator\, artist\, and writer. Her visual work\, exhibited internationally\, covers a range of media and forms\, including artist books. Since 2005\, she writes about former Black Panther artist Emory Douglas’s work\, including his current international human rights artist activism. Her essays on his work appear in Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas (for which she wrote introductions to the 2014 edition and current third edition)\, and other books and publications. The 2022 book The Black Experience in Design includes her interview with Emory Douglas and an essay on evolving visual literacy. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees’ cameras off.  Automatic closed captioning will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Poster House is excited to offer an exclusive design-focused tour of Death Is Not the End at the Rubin Museum of Art\, led by exhibition designers Isometric Studios.  \nDeath Is Not the End is a cross-cultural exhibition that explores notions of death and afterlife through the art of Tibetan Buddhism and Christianity. During a time of great global turmoil\, loss\, and uncertainty\, the exhibition invites contemplation of the universal human condition of impermanence and the desire to continue to exist. \nThe exhibition features prints\, oil paintings\, bone ornaments\, thangka paintings\, sculptures\, illuminated manuscripts\, and ritual items\, and brings together 58 objects spanning 12 centuries from the Rubin Museum’s collection alongside artworks on loan from private collections and major institutions. \nThe exhibition is organized around three major themes: the Human Condition\, or the shared understanding of our mortality in this world; States In-Between\, or the concepts of limbo\, purgatory\, and bardo; and (After)life\, focusing on resurrection\, ideas of transformation\, and heaven. \nThis tour will take place at the Rubin Museum of Art\, located at 150 W 17th St\, New York\, NY 10011. \n

DESCRIPTION:Art Deco architecture can be found in all five boroughs\, but the largest single concentration of major Deco monuments runs along 42nd Street from 1st to 9th Avenues. The star architect of this walk is crusty modernist Raymond Hood. Participants will visit three of his four New York skyscrapers: the red-and-white-striped Daily News\, the black-and-gold American Radiator\, and the blue-green terra-cotta clad McGraw-Hill.  \nAlong the way\, guests will also visit the Chanin Building with its Rene Chambellan-designed abstract ornamentation\, and the peerless Chrysler Building\, the city’s (and the world’s) most famous Art Deco skyscraper. Additional stops will be made at lesser-known delights\, including the little-visited cluster of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design and the Beaux-Arts Apartments on East 44th Street\, which are Art Deco in style despite their names. \nThis program is presented in person. He will share his global perspective on climate activism and the role posters and graphic design play in tackling climate change. Questions are strongly encouraged! \nSaad Amer is an environmentalist\, climate justice activist and the Founder of Justice Environment\, a social impact consultancy helping businesses\, nonprofits and governments navigate climate change and the just transition. He is a consultant to the United Nations and served as an Expert Reviewer for a recent IPCC report. As one of the country’s most prolific voting rights organizers\, he has reached millions and created campaigns featuring the likes of Vice President Al Gore\, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Taylor Swift. He has researched the impacts of climate change on the ground in the Indian Himalayas funded by USAID\, co-created Harvard University’s inaugural Sustainability Plan\, and discovered a new hybrid species in French Polynesia. He has written for National Geographic\, PBS and the World Bank\, and has spoken at the United Nations\, US Department of State and TEDx. He went to Harvard University where he studied Environmental Science and Public Policy with a minor in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. He was a Fellow at Yale University’s Public Voices on the Climate Crisis with The OpEd Project.

Explore the global history of environmental activism through graphic design. Learn about the rise and fall of what we now know as Art Deco through this in-depth exhibition exploring the global phenomenon of avant-garde commercial advertising. Questions are strongly encouraged! \n3:30–5pm: PH x Teens – Vintage Playlist with the Young Lordes Collective\nJoin the Young Lordes Collective (YLC) for a special edition of PH x Teens at Poster House and make vinyl record covers that promote environmental activism. \nInspired by albums of the 1970s that used natural elements to spread messages of environmental awareness\, this activity will allow you to design your own record cover using watercolor paint\, collage\, and/or letterpress techniques. Don’t forget to include your environmental activism playlist on the back! — \nAt the intersection of artistry and activism\, the Young Lordes Collective (YLC) is a grassroots artist-activist youth collective that aims to create a growing and breathing network of underrepresented New Yorkers. Since March 2021\, the Young Lords Collective has cultivated a generative space for community-based learning\, care\, and revolutionary struggle for the emerging artists and activists of our generation. Through multimedia publications\, mutual aid initiatives\, food drives\, open mic nights\, educational discussions\, and more\, the Young Lordes Collective pays homage to activist groups of the past by uplifting the change makers of the future. \nPH x Teens is a drop-in program for young adults ages 13 to 18. Advanced registration is required; participants are not expected to stay the entire time. Youth Movements and Environmental Justice\nToday’s students have come of age during a time of environmental crises. In this special tour and talkback of We Tried to Warn You! Questions and comments are strongly encouraged! \n6:30-8pm Loving with Three Hearts Sins Invalid Film Screening & Discussion\nPoster House is thrilled to welcome Lorenzo Van Ness (they/them/elle) from Sins Invalid for a screening and discussion of Loving with Three Hearts. After the viewing\, there will be a discussion on the intersection of climate justice and disability justice. Special attention will be paid to how Sins Invalid utilizes performance to explore these connections.  \nPlease note that while Poster House is mask-optional\, this event is mask-mandatory. SUMMARY:Election Day Educator Professional Development: We Tried to Warn You!
DESCRIPTION:Join Poster House for its first Election Day\, with special guest Materials for the Arts (MFTA)! This teacher professional development will focus on Poster House’s new exhibition\, We Tried to Warn You! Environmental Crisis Posters\, 1970–2020. Participate in a guided tour of the show\, and learn more about bringing environmental justice posters back into the classroom with our Posters in Protest Educator Guide. Guests will then participate in a hands-on artmaking workshop with MFTA Master Teaching Artist Joy Suarez\, focusing on sustainability\, creative reuse\, and activism. Educators will leave with classroom-ready materials and new ideas and strategies for integrating posters and sustainable artmaking into their curricula. Participants will also learn more about educational programming and warehouse shopping at Materials for the Arts. \nThis professional development workshop is geared towards K-12 teachers. Advanced registration is required and the program costs $25 (Educator Member discounts apply).\nParticipants will receive 4 CTLE hours. Coffee and a light breakfast will be provided.
