SUMMARY:PH x Teens: Counterculture Collage
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of our new exhibitions Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art and Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party\, teens are invited to create a counterculture collage on notebooks. \nArtists Yokoo Tadanori and Tanaami Keiichi\, featured in Made in Japan\, and many designers featured in Black Power to Black People contributed to the growing anti-establishment movement of the 60s\, known as counterculture\, in response to the civil rights movement\, anti-war efforts\, and anti-censorship movements. These artists utilized collage\, digital media\, and radical imagery to make bold and progressive demands to change the status quo. \nInspired by their work\, teens will design their own radical counterculture message using collage. After they complete their notebooks\, teens are encouraged to take what they create into the exhibits to explore. \nPH x Teens is a drop-in program for young adults ages 13 to 18. Advanced registration is encouraged\, but participants are not expected to stay the entire time; guests should plan to spend about an hour on this interactive\, self-guided activity.

SUMMARY:Improvisational Drawing Intensive Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This three-hour intensive workshop will explore drawing as an improvisational technique\, opening avenues to new ways of interpreting form\, color\, and composition that go beyond direct representation. By exploring accidental imagery found in spontaneous and unplanned abstraction\, participants will not only find new means of visual expression\, but also tap into a sense of play that is often lost as artists begin to focus more on technical skill than on unrestricted pleasure. This class will work with collage\, watercolor\, and various other media.  \nRobin Mork is a Brooklyn-based illustrator and book cover designer\, and an adjunct assistant professor of illustration and design at CUNY Queens College. She has a BA from Smith College and an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. Clients include Simon & Schuster\, JP Morgan Chase\, and Columbia University\, among others.

SUMMARY:We Act As If It Is Possible: Black Feminist Aesthetics for Black Power
DESCRIPTION:“You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.”––Angela Davis \nIn honor of Women’s History Month\, Poster House is pleased to welcome Eesha Pandit and Robin Boylorn of the Crunk Feminist Collective to discuss the long-standing impact of a Black feminist aesthetic on the art of the movements that build Black Power. SUMMARY:PH x Teens: Making the Message with the Young Lordes Collective
DESCRIPTION:Teens are invited to a special a back-to-back PH x Teens event! \nIn partnership with the Young Lordes Collective\, PH x Teens invites you to a zine making workshop. The YLC will facilitate a discussion about the use of posters/pamphlets/other printable media in activism. After discussion\, teens will make a zine about something that they are passionate about. Teens are encouraged to be as creative as they please. After they create their zines\, teens are encouraged to explore Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party. \nMaia Villalba (she/they) is a Chinese Cuban communist\, organizer\, and abolitionist from Lower Manhattan. At New York University\, she concentrates in Social and Cultural Analysis at the College of Arts and Sciences and serves as the President of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Positive Club (SRH+).  In her most recent work\, Wretched Women: A Manifesto on Abolition\, Anti-Globalization\, and the International Struggle for the Commons\, she exposes the dark underbelly of global corporate development and explains how social practices\, acts of provisioning\, and forms of peer governance offer practical tools of resistance against the forces of late stage capitalism. Their manifesto is set for publication by Iskra Books in 2023. \nAt the intersection of artistry and activism\, the Young Lordes Collective (YLC) is a grassroots artist-activist youth collective that aims to create a growing and breathing network of underrepresented New Yorkers. Since March 2021\, the Young Lords Collective has cultivated a generative space for community-based learning\, care\, and revolutionary struggle for the emerging artists and activists of our generation. Through multimedia publications\, mutual aid initiatives\, food drives\, open mic nights\, educational discussions\, and more\, the Young Lordes Collective pays homage to activist groups of the past by uplifting the change makers of the future. \nPH x Teens is a drop-in program for young adults ages 13 to 18. Advanced registration is encouraged\, but participants are not expected to stay the entire time; guests should plan to spend about an hour on this interactive\, self-guided activity.

SUMMARY:Dafi Kühne: Letterpress Posters Reinvented
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning designer and printer Dafi Kühne is joining Chief Curator Angelina Lippert in conversation to present his work\, share his approach to Swiss Typography\, and give insight into his fascinating production process. Together they will ask: Do printed posters in times of digital displays in urban spaces still make sense? And why should posters be produced at great expense using the antiquated letterpress printing process\, when digital printing devices can deliver high-quality reproductions at much lower cost? In the words of Dafi\, “letterpress printing can only live on if the design is at the heart of the process and makes the connection to the present.” \nThis event is presented by Cooper Union’s Herb Lubalin Study Center and the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York. It will be held at the Frederick P. Rose Auditorium. \nDafi Kühne is a Swiss designer and letterpress printer. In his studio\, he uses a wild mix of analog and digital tools to produce cultural posters. With this one main rule in his studio\, “No PDF ever leaves the studio as a final product.” He prints all posters with letterpress printing presses. His mostly typographic posters have won international awards and been in exhibitions all around the globe.

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Black Power
DESCRIPTION:The Black Panther Party helped brand the Black Power movement through the use of posters\, prints\, and the organization’s iconic newspaper. These efforts extended beyond the use of such ephemera to encompass attire and an overall attitude that emphasized the cause. This cohesive visual identity communicated its bold\, militant values to the general public\, and was specifically inspiring to a Black audience. Poster House is thrilled to welcome Mary Philips\, Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Lehman College and Jonathan Square\, Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design to discuss the importance of demanding change through aesthetic presentation. This discussion will focus on the outward presentation of Black Panther Party members and consider the stakes involved in their militant stance when interacting with the State. \nMary Frances Phillips is a proud native of Detroit\, Michigan. She is an Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Lehman College\, City University of New York. Her interdisciplinary research agenda focuses on race and gender in post-1945 social movements and the carceral state. Her research areas include the Modern Black Freedom Struggle\, Black Feminism\, and Black Power Studies. She is currently working on her book manuscript\, Sister Love: Ericka Huggins\, Spiritual Wellness\, and the Black Panther Party\, which is under contract with New York University Press. This project is the first and only scholarly monograph on the life experiences of Black Panther veteran Ericka Huggins. \nDr. Jonathan Michael Square is the Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design. He was previously a lecturer in the Committee on Degree in History and Literature at Harvard University and a fellow in the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The recipient of numerous fellowships and grants\, Dr. Square’s work considers histories of enslavement through the lens of fashion\, and his research has appeared in numerous scholarly and public-facing venues. Currently\, he is working on a book manuscript tentatively titled Negro Cloth: How Slavery Birthed the American Fashion Industry. Beyond Past Is Present\, He has curated exhibitions at Harvard University and is currently curating another exhibition at Winterthur Museum\, Garden\, and Library.
