SUMMARY:Art Deco Metropolis
DESCRIPTION:The Chrysler Building\, the Waldorf-Astoria\, Rockefeller Center—these are among the hundreds of Art Deco monuments that during the 1920s and ‘30s helped create the image of New York City as the world’s modern metropolis. In New York\, Art Deco evolved through a series of Manhattan skyscrapers into the city’s chief architectural language. Following a massive reawakening of interest in them during the 1970s\, New York’s Deco buildings survive today as prized remnants of a distant yet modern past that still help define the city’s visual identity. \nThis lecture is presented by Anthony W. Robins\, Vice-President of the Art Deco Society of New York and author of New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture and will cover the great skyscrapers of architects Raymond Hood\, William Van Alen\, Ely Jacques Kahn\, and Ralph Walker\, including the Daily News\, Empire State\, Irving Trust\, General Electric\, American Radiator\, Barclay-Vesey\, and RCA Buildings. It will trace the adaptation of this “skyscraper style” through apartment buildings on the Bronx’s Grand Concourse\, airport terminals at LaGuardia\, the Central Park West residential skyline\, automated midtown parking garages\, diners\, night-clubs\, hotels\, department stores\, banks\, and Radio City Music Hall. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees’ cameras off.  Automatic closed captioning will be provided. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is available upon request with two weeks notice — please email access@posterhouse.org to request interpretation services.\nA recording of this event will be made available for all registered attendees.\nQuestions about accessibility? Please contact Sarit Cahana\, Access Coordinator\, at access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387‬.\nFor all other event related questions\, please contact info@posterhouse.org

SUMMARY:Rediscovering New York’s Art Deco Architecture
DESCRIPTION:On January 11\, 1982\, a dozen admirers of Art Deco gathered in the Murray Hill apartment of interior designer Henriette Nathan to hold the first official meeting of the newly incorporated Art Deco Society of New York. Interest in the modernistic styles of the 1920s and ‘30s had been growing worldwide since a seminal Paris retrospective exhibition of 1966\, and a number of New York’s Deco superstars––Radio City Music Hall\, the Chrysler Building\, the Empire State Building––had found shelter under the city’s 1965 Landmarks Law. The revival of interest in Art Deco\, however\, was still in its early days. Forty years later\, Art Deco may be the single most recognizable architectural style in New York City\, where more than 80 individual Deco buildings have won Landmarks protection\, along with dozens more in historic districts\, including a stretch of the Grand Concourse. \nIn this lecture\, Anthony W. Robins––who joined ADSNY while the Society was still getting organized and currently serves as its Vice President––will trace the extraordinary growth of New York’s fascination with Art Deco architecture and its rocky road to acceptance in historic preservation circles. Robins witnessed much of that story while on staff at the Landmarks Preservation Commission\, where he wrote the designation reports of half-a-dozen Deco landmarks. He will revisit resounding victories\, from rescuing Radio City in the late 1970s to the interiors of the Waldorf-Astoria in 2017. He will also highlight major restorations\, from the Empire State Building’s lobby to the Orchard Beach Bathhouse\, and recount some of the lamentable losses––from Bonwit Teller\, demolished in 1980\, to the McGraw Hill Building lobby\, stripped to the walls in 2021––serving as a reminder that there is still work to be done. SUMMARY:We Tried To Warn You! Exhibition Talk at the Clark
DESCRIPTION:For the last half-century\, artists and designers all over the world over have sought to express the urgency of environmental issues in graphic terms—and to spark action. Tim Medland\, curator of the current exhibition at Poster House in New York\, We Tried to Warn You!\, joins Clark curator of contemporary projects\, Robert Wiesenberger\, for an introduction to the exhibition and a conversation about what it might take to get the message across. \nThis event takes place at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute\, located at 225 South St\, Williamstown\, MA 01267.

SUMMARY:In Their Own Words: Art Deco Architects Speak
DESCRIPTION:The great Art Deco skyscrapers—the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building—were designed by socially prominent architects\, often of old New York stock. But a generation of lesser-known architects and builders—new to the profession and often new to the country—helped spread the Deco style across the more modest\, but also more numerous\, middle-class landscapes of the city\, from the Garment District to the Grand Concourse. In the late 1970s and early 1980s\, Anthony W. Robins had the good fortune to meet and interview three of those architects\, and he recorded the interviews. \nThe three architects––Israel Crausman\, Louis Allen Abramson\, and Marvin Fine––came from varying backgrounds. This program  explores the work of these architects—three of the dozens who helped transform the face of New York City in the 1920s and ‘30s—through their own words. In addition to Robins’s commentary\, participants will hear the architects describe their buildings\, their experiences\, and their inspirations. SUMMARY:Members–Only Tour: Storywork at Print Center New York
DESCRIPTION:Poster House Members are invited to a private tour of Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt at Print Center NY. This exhibition is the artist’s first traveling retrospective and the first to reflect the role of printmaking in her ambitious interdisciplinary work\, considering her output as both a process and a philosophy—a medium that has had a nuanced and enduring impact on her career since 1996. Featuring over 50 works\, Storywork presents Watt’s incredible etchings\, lithographs\, and woodcuts alongside a selection of her monumentally-scaled sculptures and textiles.  \nWatt is a member of the Seneca Nation with German-Scot ancestry. Her work is a site of twinned language between the present and the past\, drawing from Native and non-Native traditions such as Greco-Roman myth\, pop culture\, and Indigenous oral narratives. \nThis tour will take place at Print Center New York\, located at 535 W 24th St\, New York\, NY 10011. Space is limited!
