SUMMARY:First Friday: Fused Plastic Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what you can create with discarded plastics? Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Fallout: Atoms for War & Peace\, this hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the technique of fusing or layering plastics using an iron. Participants will explore the material affordances of various types of biodegradable\, recyclable\, and single-use plastics in order to create fused plastic collages inspired by posters on environmental activism. Join us in this imaginative intervention into the life cycle of plastics! Please note: masks are required due to the materials used in this workshop. \nWe encourage attendees to bring a piece of plastic to this workshop (flexible ones such as bags\, mailers\, or food packaging work best; they can be biodegradable\, recyclable\, or single-use). All materials and tools provided; no previous experience necessary. \nFan Kong (she/her) is a researcher and teaching artist rooted in Queens\, New York City. Born in China but raised in Hong Kong\, Fan works to build safe and inclusive spaces where youth and families can practice social change-making through the arts\, especially across languages and generations. She is the founder of Craft Services (follow her on Instagram @fakefankong)\, creating educational products inspired by everyday art\, science\, and technology. Kong received her B.A. in Art History from Columbia University and M.Ed. in Learning Sciences and Human Development from the University of Washington. \nAccessibility Note: Closed captions will be used for this screening. Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Mike King & the Art of the Gig Poster
DESCRIPTION:Poster House members are invited to a private tour of the exhibition Copy/Paste/Print/Repeat: Mike King & the Art of the Gig Poster. Today\, there are few major venues or bands that have not worked with King—and his imagery has saturated American music culture\, appearing on album covers\, T-shirts\, and\, most importantly\, posters. Light refreshments will be provided. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. However\, unless you were a straphanger yourself during that time\, you are probably not aware that the interiors of the subway cars were also completely covered with bold signatures of every size written with homemade fountain pens and magic markers. This chiseled-script calligraphy dripped and ran over every available space inside the subway cars between about 1970 and 1989. In his photographs from this era\, Richard Sandler captured New Yorkers amidst this visual chaotic energy\, which he likens to free jazz or the semblance of thoughts within the minds of his subjects.   \nHosted in honor of From the Bronx to the Battery: The Subway Sun\, this workshop will discuss and look back at this little-studied phenomenon that was once a large part of the city’s aesthetic and can be seen in countless movies from Saturday Night Fever to Coming to America. Visitors will look at examples and create their own tag-covered image on a subway interior template\, using chisel- and broad-nibbed markers to mimic this time-honored practice. You can take home your piece on glossy cardstock at the end of the workshop.  \nThis is not a drop-in workshop. Please plan on arriving on time and staying for the duration of the event. Appropriate for participants ages 13 and up.  \nSam Meyerson is a visual designer who grew up studying and practicing within the “Graffiti Art” movement. He has a deep affinity for the subway\, and for the youth-oriented folk-art forms of graffiti that turned public urban environments into museums. He has painted murals for BEYOND THE STREETS and designed apparel for Supreme. He currently lives in NYC\, where he works as a freelance artist in several capacities and mediums. \n4–5pm: Spanish-language Tour of Puerto Rico in Print \nLorenzo Homar was one of Puerto Rico’s most influential graphic designers and is often referred to as the father of the Puerto Rican poster.
