SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: The Art of the Literary Poster
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to offer its Members a curatorial tour of the exhibition The Art of the Literary Poster: Works from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection. Currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, this exhibition features dozens of posters from the turn of the 20th century advertising literary publications in the United States. Considered to be one of the finest and most complete literary poster collections in the country\, this show highlights legendary work by the likes of Edward Penfied\, Ethel Reed\, and Will Bradley. \nThis tour takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, located at 1000 5th Ave\, New York\, NY 10028. \nPlease check in and pick up tickets at the Great Hall Groups Desk\, located across the Colossal Statue of the Seated Pharaoh at the Museum’s Main Entrance. Plan on allocating some time for the security check prior to entering the building. Chief Curator Angelina Lippert will be waiting to help check in guests.

Throughout the exhibition\, Poster House will screen a selection of films from the movie-focused exhibition. On Friday\, May 17\, there will be a free screening of the romantic classic\, Sleepless in Seattle. The year before this poster was created\, Dawn became one of the first female cofounders of a Hollywood design studio. This poster was one of the first she created with the use of Photoshop—at the time\, a new digital tool many studios were not yet using. SUMMARY:New York's Great Art Deco Corridor Architectural Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Art Deco architecture can be found in all five boroughs\, but the largest single concentration of major Deco monuments runs along 42nd Street from 1st to 9th Avenues. The star architect of this walk is crusty modernist Raymond Hood. Participants will visit three of his four New York skyscrapers: the red-and-white-striped Daily News\, the black-and-gold American Radiator\, and the blue-green terra-cotta clad McGraw-Hill.  \nAlong the way\, guests will also visit the Chanin Building with its Rene Chambellan-designed abstract ornamentation\, and the peerless Chrysler Building\, the city’s (and the world’s) most famous Art Deco skyscraper. Additional stops will be made at lesser-known delights\, including the little-visited cluster of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design and the Beaux-Arts Apartments on East 44th Street\, which are Art Deco in style despite their names.

SUMMARY:West Village Neon Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich Village is home to some of the best surviving vintage neon signs in New York. First appearing in the 1920s and ‘30s\, they advertised businesses large and small throughout the city before falling  out of favor in the 1960s thanks to rising costs\, restrictive zoning ordinances\, and the ascendance of cheaper alternatives. In recent years\, old neon storefront signs have all but disappeared as independent businesses across NYC have succumbed to rent hikes and old age. \nJoin Tom Rinaldi\, author of New York Neon\, on a walking tour of the West Village and discover around a dozen vintage signs dating from the 1930s\, ‘40s and ‘50s\, marking the locations of some of the neighborhood’s most stalwart restaurants\, bars\, and small businesses. Participants will see them at dusk\, as they start to come to life and when they look their best. Some have been beautifully restored; all are in perpetual danger of disappearing. Rinaldi will discuss their materials\, design\, origins\, and future. The meeting point will be announced to ticket holders shortly in advance of the tour date. \nThomas Rinaldi grew up in the Hudson River Valley near Poughkeepsie\, New York. He is the author of Patented: 1\,000 Design Patents (Phaidon\, 2021)\, New York Neon (W.W. Norton\, 2012)\, and the co-author of the book Hudson Valley Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of an American Landscape (University Press of New England\, 2006). His photographs have been published in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the New York Post\, the New York Observer\, Westchester Magazine\, CNN Online\, and have been exhibited at the New York State Museum at Albany and at the Municipal Art Society of New York. He holds degrees from Georgetown University and Columbia University\, and has worked for the National Park Service\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation\, and the Central Park Conservancy. Rinaldi currently works as an architectural designer in New York City.

DESCRIPTION:Queer Artist Stories offers a unique twist on traditional figure drawing sessions. Instead of a passive model\, a local queer artist will be posing and sharing their personal story while participants sketch them. The session aims to provide a platform for LGBTQ+ artists to share their compelling narratives. \nThis event fosters an intimate dialogue between the artists and the attendees. The session will kick off with short warm-up poses before progressing to four 10-minute poses\, during which the artist will cover topics such as technique\, style\, community\, and inspiration from a queer perspective. \nAll skill levels are encouraged to join this special session. Admission includes a complimentary drink and all necessary materials. Members can take advantage of a discount by entering their email address in the promo-code section during checkout. \nFreddie Chavda is a talented collage artist known for his innovative work. He is also the founder of The Brooklyn Loft\, a vibrant art and workshop studio located in Bushwick. SUMMARY:AIDS Activist Graphics & Lesbian Visibility: A Conversation Between Ksenia M. Soboleva and Marlene McCarty
DESCRIPTION:The AIDS crisis activated one of the most highly effective artist-driven political movements of the 20th century. Activist artist collectives such as Gran Fury appropriated advertising strategies and seductive graphic styles to disseminate information\, create visibility\, and draw attention to the political nature of the epidemic. Poster House is pleased to host a conversation between art historian Ksenia M. Soboleva and artist Marlene McCarty\, a core member of Gran Fury\, to explore the ways in which lesbian identity was navigated and represented in the collective’s work\, as well as in McCarty’s personal studio practice.  \nDr. Ksenia M. Soboleva is a New York based writer and art historian specializing in queer art and culture. She holds a PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts\, NYU\, with a dissertation on art\, AIDS\, and lesbian identity in the United States. Currently\, she is working on the book project Friendship as a Way of Art: Queer Identity and Visual Citation and is co-editing the first monograph of the queer 1990s gallery Trial BALLOON (forthcoming with Karma). Soboleva is a regular contributor to the Brooklyn Rail and BOMB magazine\, and her writing has appeared in various exhibition catalogues and artist monographs. She teaches at the New School and NYU. \nMarlene McCarty is an artist\, designer\, and activist who lives and works in NYC. She studied and was apprenticed at the once-renowned Kunstgewerbeschule Basel: Grafikfachklasse. McCarty was a member of the AIDS activist collective Gran Fury\, co-founder of the transdisciplinary design studio\, Bureau\, and has exhibited globally as an artist since the 1990s. She is represented by the Sikkema Jenkins & Co. Gallery and is professor of Visual Arts at NYU Steinhardt. Her work is in the collections of major institutions\, including the Brooklyn Museum\, Kunsthaus Zürich\, the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles\, and the Museum of Modern Art\, New York. \nAccessibility Note: This online event will be livestreamed on YouTube. DESCRIPTION:Every month\, Poster House offers virtual Vibrant Verbal Description Tours specifically for community members who are blind or have low vision. In order to reach a wide\, art-loving audience around the world\, we offer our description tours online through Zoom. These tours are led by our Educators\, allowing you intimate access to the items in our current shows and permanent collection. \nThis month’s tour will focus on the exhibition\, The Sleeping Giant: Posters & The Chinese Economy. \nPlease email access@posterhouse.org or call ‪914.295.2387 to sign up for this event. You will be emailed poster images for reference as well as information about accessing Zoom the morning of the virtual tour. DESCRIPTION:Poster House Members are invited to a private tour of the exhibition The Anatomy of a Movie Poster: The Work of Dawn Baillie. Join curator Angelina Lippert as she discusses Dawn Baillie’s involvement with some of the most iconic and beloved posters in modern cinematic history. Learn about the evolution of the production of movie posters through an impressive career that has spanned almost four decades. Light refreshments will be provided. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is available upon request.
