SUMMARY:Indigenous History is Poster History
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to welcome graphic designer and scholar Sadie Redwing for a wide-ranging conversation on Indigenous poster history and graphic communication. Describing the perspective of Indigenous ideology in visual communication is very challenging—especially to an audience who does not understand the harm of cultural appropriation. Indigenous sensitivity to appropriation is not taken into consideration when designing for representational material or identifying a traditional presence in the common world. Native Americans rely on stereotypes to distinguish themselves from other cultures. The struggle to display an accurate tribal identity derives from oppression and historical trauma through Western education. American Indian boarding schools erased the traditional image of a Native American that left tribal students uncertain of who they were as people.   \nAs Indigenous peoples progress from the American Indian Boarding School era\, the urge to distinct tribes from Pan-Indianism forces a greater responsibility from Indigenous designers to visually communicate sovereignty. The role of an Indigenous visual communicator requires the practice of visual sovereignty\, or decolonizing the stereotypical representation into a traditional image for cultural education. Indigenous visual communicators have the power to give Native Americans a respected-face in the world by revealing tribal visual languages in visual communication. The rising movement of visual sovereignty in Indigenous visual communication has revolutionized a new fight against stereotypes and continues to revitalize an honorable image away from the subordinate portrayal of indigenous peoples.  \nSadie Red Wing is a Lakota/Dakota graphic designer and advocate from the Spirit Lake Nation. Red Wing earned her BFA in New Media Arts and Interactive Design at the Institute of American Indian Arts. She received her Master of Graphic Design from North Carolina State University. Her research on cultural revitalization through design tools and strategies created a new demand for tribal competence in graphic design research. Red Wing urges Native American graphic designers to express visual sovereignty in their design work\, as well as\, encourages academia to include an indigenous perspective in design curriculum. Currently\, Red Wing serves as an Assistant Professor at OCAD University (Toronto\, ONT). \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees’ cameras off.  Automatic closed captioning will be provided. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is available upon request with two weeks notice — please email access@posterhouse.org to request interpretation services.\nA recording of this event will be made available for all registered attendees.\nQuestions about accessibility? Please contact Sarit Cahana\, Access Coordinator\, at access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387‬.\nFor all other event related questions\, please contact info@posterhouse.org

SUMMARY:Worm Book Release with Edel Rodriguez & Chip Kidd
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to host “America’s illustrator-in-chief\,” Edel Rodriguez\, in conversation with graphic designer and writer\, Chip Kidd\, for a wide-ranging conversation on Rodriguez’s new graphic memoir Worm: A Cuban American Odyssey. Worm is available for purchase at the Poster House Shop; book signing to follow. \nThrough vivid\, stirring art\, Worm tells the story of a boyhood in the midst of the Cold War\, a family’s displacement in exile\, and their tenacious longing for those they left behind. It also recounts the coming-of-age of an artist and activist\, who\, witnessing America’s turn from democracy to extremism\, struggles to differentiate his adoptive country from the dictatorship he fled. Confronting questions of patriotism and the liminal nature of belonging\, Edel Rodriguez ultimately celebrates the immigrants\, maligned and overlooked\, who guard and invigorate American freedom. \nEdel Rodriguez is a Cuban American artist who has exhibited internationally with shows in Los Angeles\, New York\, London\, Prague\, Berlin\, La Paz and Spain. Inspired by personal history\, religious rituals\, politics\, memory\, and nostalgia\, his bold\, figurative works are an examination of identity\, cultural displacement\, and mortality. \nChip Kidd is a graphic designer and writer in New York City. As editor-at-large for graphic novels for Pantheon books\, he has worked with some of the best artists in the business\, including Chris Ware\, Art Spiegelman\, Alex Ross\, Michael Cho\, Charles Burns\, Anita Kunz\, and Neil Gaiman\, among many others. SUMMARY:Art Deco Metropolis
DESCRIPTION:The Chrysler Building\, the Waldorf-Astoria\, Rockefeller Center—these are among the hundreds of Art Deco monuments that during the 1920s and ‘30s helped create the image of New York City as the world’s modern metropolis. In New York\, Art Deco evolved through a series of Manhattan skyscrapers into the city’s chief architectural language. Following a massive reawakening of interest in them during the 1970s\, New York’s Deco buildings survive today as prized remnants of a distant yet modern past that still help define the city’s visual identity. \nThis lecture is presented by Anthony W. Robins\, Vice-President of the Art Deco Society of New York and author of New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture and will cover the great skyscrapers of architects Raymond Hood\, William Van Alen\, Ely Jacques Kahn\, and Ralph Walker\, including the Daily News\, Empire State\, Irving Trust\, General Electric\, American Radiator\, Barclay-Vesey\, and RCA Buildings. It will trace the adaptation of this “skyscraper style” through apartment buildings on the Bronx’s Grand Concourse\, airport terminals at LaGuardia\, the Central Park West residential skyline\, automated midtown parking garages\, diners\, night-clubs\, hotels\, department stores\, banks\, and Radio City Music Hall.

SUMMARY:Rediscovering New York’s Art Deco Architecture
DESCRIPTION:On January 11\, 1982\, a dozen admirers of Art Deco gathered in the Murray Hill apartment of interior designer Henriette Nathan to hold the first official meeting of the newly incorporated Art Deco Society of New York. Interest in the modernistic styles of the 1920s and ‘30s had been growing worldwide since a seminal Paris retrospective exhibition of 1966\, and a number of New York’s Deco superstars––Radio City Music Hall\, the Chrysler Building\, the Empire State Building––had found shelter under the city’s 1965 Landmarks Law. The revival of interest in Art Deco\, however\, was still in its early days. Forty years later\, Art Deco may be the single most recognizable architectural style in New York City\, where more than 80 individual Deco buildings have won Landmarks protection\, along with dozens more in historic districts\, including a stretch of the Grand Concourse. \nIn this lecture\, Anthony W. Robins––who joined ADSNY while the Society was still getting organized and currently serves as its Vice President––will trace the extraordinary growth of New York’s fascination with Art Deco architecture and its rocky road to acceptance in historic preservation circles. Robins witnessed much of that story while on staff at the Landmarks Preservation Commission\, where he wrote the designation reports of half-a-dozen Deco landmarks. He will revisit resounding victories\, from rescuing Radio City in the late 1970s to the interiors of the Waldorf-Astoria in 2017. He will also highlight major restorations\, from the Empire State Building’s lobby to the Orchard Beach Bathhouse\, and recount some of the lamentable losses––from Bonwit Teller\, demolished in 1980\, to the McGraw Hill Building lobby\, stripped to the walls in 2021––serving as a reminder that there is still work to be done. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to put ink on paper with a master printer described in Hyperallergic as having “the feistiness of a best friend\, the warmth of a grandmother\, a low tolerance for bullshit\, and the energy of the most precocious toddler.” \nAmos Paul Kennedy\, Jr. is a prolific letterpress printer based out of Detroit\, Michigan\, known for his social and political commentary and distinctive\, layered printing style.
