SUMMARY:Members–Only Tour: Rare Bookbindings at the Grolier Club
DESCRIPTION:Poster House Members are invited to a private tour of two shows at the Grolier Club\, Judging a Book By Its Cover: Bookbindings from the Collections of the Grolier Club\, 1470s–2020 and Language\, Decipherment\, and Translation\, led by Eve Kahn. \nThe first exhibition highlights seven centuries’ worth of rare bookbindings\, exploring the history of decorating bindings\, bookbindings as art objects\, what makes a binding especially collectible\, and the Grolier’s role in commissioning fine bindings. Prepare to be dazzled by changing techniques\, aesthetics\, and materials from Renaissance-era animal-skin bindings\, studded with silver coins and precious stones\, to Arts and Crafts embroidered examples and recent experiments in gilded polychrome and tinted plastic. \nThe second exhibition looks at how information has been conveyed and misinterpreted in various languages\, from 16th-century scholarly tomes attempting to decode hieroglyphics through contemporary book artists’ meditations on medieval Arabic calligraphy and American slang.  \nThese tours will take place at the Grolier Club\, located at 47 E 60th St\, New York\, NY 10022. SUMMARY:Ebony It Girls: Black Women's Fashion of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:An “It Girl” is a woman who defines the fashion\, culture\, and beauty of an era. During the early twentieth century\, popular Black stage and screen performers defined Black women as fashion symbols. From Josephine Baker’s banana skirt to Florence Mills’s perfectly shaped bob\, the Black female performer embodied sensuality\, elegance\, and beauty despite widespread anti-Blackness that had stripped these women of their humanity only decades prior. Black female performers were propelled to the status of celebrity by way of prioritizing and valuing fashion and dress. \nThis hybrid event will discuss the most notable performers of the 1920s and ‘30s who set out to define Black womanhood as assertive\, beautiful\, and sensual. \nEs-pranza Humphrey is a historian of Black studies and museum educator based out of New York. She received her BA in History from the University of New Haven and her MA in American Studies from Columbia University. Her research has incorporated interdisciplinary approaches to spotlight the Black feminine identity expressed through various forms of performance art. Her latest research endeavors focus on the history of fashion as activism for Black women in the 20th century. She is currently the Assistant Curator of Collections at Poster House

SUMMARY:Introductory Book-Binding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Poster House for a bookmaking workshop using reclaimed papers generously provided by Mohawk. Explore basic bookbinding techniques and forms\, such as pamphlet stitching\, stab binding\, and accordion folds. Participants will come away with their own hand-made journals or artist’s books embellished with decorative binding\, embroidery\, and/or stamps. No previous experience necessary; all materials provided. \nBefore the workshop\, stop by Poster House’s Café de Affiches from 5:30-6:30pm to meet representatives from Mohawk Paper and learn more about the company and its high-quality papers.  \nInstructors: \nFan Kong (she/her) is a bookmaker and biomaterials artist based in Queens\, New York. As a teaching artist\, she works to build inclusive spaces where participants can practice social-changemaking through the arts and inquiry\, especially across languages and generations. In 2020\, she founded Craft Services\, creating educational products inspired by everyday art\, science\, and technology.  \nSabrina Sims (she/her) is a bi\, Black Puerto Rican\, chronically ill artist from the Bronx. Her saturated multimedia work focuses on Black cosmic tech\, softness as a tactile-emotional feeling\, and community idea sharing. She enjoys synthesizing mediums\, including printmaking/zines\, textiles\, biomaterials\, and livecoded audiovisuals. Sabrina organizes several COVID-safer DIY music events and art fairs with a focus on accessibility for disabled creatives. SUMMARY:Grand Central Terminal Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:On February 1\, 1913\, Grand Central Terminal opened its doors to an admiring public. On February 1\, 2013\, the beautifully restored Terminal—rescued from destruction by a seminal 1978 Supreme Court decision—celebrated its Centennial\, accompanied by exhibitions\, events\, and the new book\, Grand Central Terminal: 100 Years of a New York Landmark. The Terminal’s creation combined engineering bravado (sinking two train yards below ground)\, technological wizardry (electrifying the trains to eliminate steam and enable their underground functioning)\, and real-estate savvy (replacing the original street-level train yard with 16 blocks of prime midtown Manhattan real-estate\, whose development paid for it all) with innovative planning (interior ramps and looping tracks) and Paris-inspired Beaux-Arts design. This walking tour will bring the Terminal to life—its remarkable history\, stunning architecture\, and central role in creating midtown Manhattan. \nAnthony W. Robins is a writer\, historian\, lecturer and guide\, and former Director of Survey at New York’s Landmarks Commission. He is the author of half a dozen books on New York City architecture\, including the award-winning New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture (SUNY Press). A founding member of the Art Deco Society of New York\, Robins currently serves as its Vice President. He has led countless visitors on tours of New York City’s history and architecture\, taught at NYU and Columbia University\, and lectures for museums\, universities\, and private groups around the world.

Highlights will include the annual members’ show as well as the exhibition Exposition Littéraire outour de Mallarmé. This intriguing show includes numerous artists across various media responding to re-readings and re-writings of Stéphane Mallarmé’s iconic poem “Un Coup de Dés Jamais N’Abolira le Hasard.” Mallarmé’s 1879 piece became a touchstone for the avant-garde\, revolutionizing the visual art and literary communities of the era\, including the work of Man Ray and Picasso. This exhibition continues that journey\, chronicling the ongoing effect of Mallarmé’s experiments on culture by exhibiting works by international artists from a diverse range of backgrounds. \nThis tour will take place at Center for Book Arts\, located at 28 W 27th St\, New York\, NY 10001. DESCRIPTION:Join Shrujana N. Shridhar\, a Mumbai-based artist and illustrator\, and Christina Dhanuja\, the co-founder of Dalit History Month\, for a presentation on the literary and political movements led by the Dalit Panthers. This conversation will delve into the Dalit Panther Archive’s digitized treasures—posters\, magazines\, and revolutionary poetry—and their transformative impact on Marathi literature. \nThe Dalit Panthers and the Little Magazine movement challenged the entrenched norms of Marathi literary circles in the 1970s\, by bravely confronting dominant caste perspectives that had long dictated the aesthetics\, linguistics\, and thematic directions of prose and poetry. They explored the radical reimagining of expression by dismantling oppressive gazes and ushering in an era of authentic voices and diverse narratives. \nThis presentation will uncover the struggles and triumphs of visionary leaders\, and the communities that enabled them to navigate India’s changing political and cultural landscape\, leaving an indelible mark on the trajectory of anti-caste literature and creative expression. It offers a journey through time and ideology\, with insights into the power of literature that challenges\, provokes\, and inspires change. It presents an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of those who dared to disrupt literary fiefdoms. \nJoin us as we celebrate Dalit History Month by honoring the Dalit Panthers\, whose spirit of resistance continues to resonate through our lives and the pages of contemporary anti-caste literature in India. \nShrujana N. Shridhar is an artist and illustrator based in Mumbai\, India. Her practice examines the intersection of caste\, gender\, and capitalism. It honors the resilience of communities that fought caste and gender oppression for centuries. She received the SSAF–AAA Research Grant for Archiving Histories of Art\, Ideas\, and Visual Culture in 2019. Shrujana has been published in magazines in India and abroad. Her work has been exhibited at Clark House Initiative in Mumbai\, the Showroom in London\, China Residencies at Centre for Media at Risk at the University of Pennsylvania\, and Arts House Melbourne. \nShrujana has written and illustrated children’s books. She runs the Dalit Panther Archive\, digitizing and archiving Little Magazines and literature published by the members of the Dalit Panther movement. She is a co-founder of Mavelinadu Collective\, an anti-caste publication. \nChristina Dhanuja (aka Christina Dhanaraj) is a researcher by academic qualification\, a strategy consultant by experience\, and an external relations professional. Over the last ~14 years\, she has held multiple roles in India\, China\, Singapore\, and the Netherlands\, working with a diverse set of stakeholders in government\, business\, and development sectors. Christina was formerly an external relations advisor at the Shell Headquarters in the Hague and a business advisor to the country chair of Shell China. She is the convener and founder member of the Global Campaign for Dalit Women\, a minority-led initiative that works with survivors of sexual violence\, climate change\, caste atrocities\, and economic oppression. She consults with corporates\, non-profits\, faith-based institutions\, and academia advising on caste diversity\, equity\, & inclusion\, leadership development\, and accountability frameworks. \nChristina is also the co-founder of the #DalitHistoryMonth project and has published on intersectional discourses between caste\, gender\, religion\, race\, sexuality\, and mental health. SUMMARY:Dafi Kühne: Poster Cult
DESCRIPTION:As one of Switzerland’s foremost poster designers\, Dafi Kühne produces diverse work that plays with the contrast between old production tools and modern layouts. While printed on traditional presses from the 1960s\, his posters do not look like typical letterpress prints. Instead\, they connect to the history of letterpress production while pushing the boundaries through modern tools of what is possible. Through the use of of analog printing presses\, computers\, lasercutters\, and freshly cast hot-metal-type\, he creates wildly creative\, large-format posters. From his vast letterpress studio in the Swiss Alps\, Dafi Kühne simultaneously drives poster culture and upholds the cult of the poster. In this talk\, Dafi will give insight into his processes and his approach to Swiss typographic poster design.
