SUMMARY:First Friday: Introductory Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to welcome artist and printmaking expert Misa Chhan for an introduction to Cyanotype printing. Known for their brilliant blue hues\, cyanotypes are a photosensitive printing process that utilizes UV light to transfer images. Learn the basics of this historic form of printmaking as well as techniques for shifting tones from blue to brown. No previous experience required. \nMisa Chhan is a Los Angeles-based artist who works with natural dyes\, textiles\, printmaking\, and artist’s books. Her background in book arts\, papermaking\, and natural fibers led her to explore natural dyes and fibers as a medium to engage with and learn from the natural world. SUMMARY:Afro-Futurism and Nike
DESCRIPTION:The sports world has often been a critical marker of future trends in celebrity\, style\, marketing\, and youth culture. The museum’s current exhibition\, Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes\, demonstrates how posters of notable athletes set the tone for the future of sports branding\, fostering the idea of the “Sports Star.” Poster House is thrilled to host a panel discussion about the ways in which Nike allows us to consider Afro-Futurism within the messaging and styling of a brand that has had special appeal for Black people.This panel will examine Afro-Futurism in the context of fashion history\, literature\, and visual language to investigate a future that never was. Join us in thinking about Nike branding from a new  perspective. \nDominique Norman (she/they) is a writer and educator whose work critically examines the complex intersections of fashion\, media\, race\, gender\, the body\, sexuality\, and culture. Aside from her digitally published work for numerous media outlets including Refinery29\, Bustle\, Teen Vogue\, Essence\, and Fashionista\, she has also written for several books and journals. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Fashion Marketing at Marymount Manhattan College\, and an adjunct professor at LIM College and FIT. Her research focuses on the Afropunk subculture and how fashion and streetwear culture is used as a tool of resistance. \nVictoria Dadet (she/they) is a Harlem-based scholar and museum professional with a background in youth-focused grassroots political organizing. They have a Bachelor’s in Ethnic Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Master’s in American Studies from the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University. Their work investigates the connections between the Black Radical Tradition\, grassroots organizing\, ideas about modernity and futurity\, and the development of political consciousness among young people. Her research examines the social and political values held by New York City teenagers in the mid-1960s and how such values were influenced by Black community organizers in Harlem.  \nEs-pranza Humphrey is the Assistant Curator of Collections at Poster House. She received her BA in History from the University of New Haven and her MA in American Studies from Columbia University\, where she examined American history\, literature\, and culture in relation to those of countries across the globe. Her research has incorporated interdisciplinary approaches to the Black feminine identity expressed through various forms of performance art and fashion. She has been featured in the New Yorker\, ABC Here and Now\, National Public Radio (NPR)\, the Fashion and Race Database\, and a number of international publications for her curatorial work on the visual media of the Black Panther Party. SUMMARY:Bearing Witness: Black Printmakers “Calling Out” America!
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the acclaimed exhibition Lester Beall & A New American Identity\, Poster House is pleased to partner with the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop for an engaging conversation with esteemed scholar and historian Leslie King Hammond. This presentation reflects on the artistry of African American printmakers in the era of President Roosevelt’s Works Project Administration of 1935 to 1941\, work that had a powerful impact on subsequent generations of Black printmakers. Each artist–then and now–sought to create original and truthful prints in their chosen mediums and modalities to “signify on” (or indirectly criticize) the realities of their lives as citizens in the United States. \nLeslie King Hammond is an art historian\, artist\, curator\, educator\, community innovator\, and Professor Emerita\, former Dean of Graduate Studies\, and Project Director for the Ford Foundation-Philip Morris Fellowships for Artists of Color\, and Founding Director of the Center of Race and Culture at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her board service includes the American Craft Council; the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture; the Collections Committee of the  Walters Art Museum; the Advisory Board of Craft in America’s Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026; and the Advisory Board of AWARE-The Origin of Others. King Hammond has received lifetime achievement awards from the Studio Museum of Harlem; the Women’s Art Caucus of the College Art Association; the Brandywine Workshop and Archives; the Dubois Circle; the James A. Porter Colloquium at Howard University; and the Creative Alliance. He will also talk about  how that collab came to be\, his own experiences at Nike as a product line manager in its branded basketball-apparel group\, and\, of course\, those limited-edition styles themselves\, including Air Force Is\, IIs\, and IIIs\, Dunk Highs and Lows\, Vandal Highs and Lows\, and Blazers.
