SUMMARY:Japanese Woodblock Printing Demo: The Great Wave
DESCRIPTION:Japan is home to one of the most dynamic and revered print cultures in the world. Poster House is thrilled to partner with New York’s Ronin Gallery and Globus Washitsu to host woodblock printer Hironobu Numabe of Numabe Mokuhan print workshop in Tokyo for a demonstration showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of traditional Japanese printing. Numabe will discuss the technique\, history\, and joy of their art as well as presenting the related tools\, pigments\, and original woodblocks.  \nWhile some guests may have the opportunity to try their hand at this historic printing process\, the true highlight will be Numabe incredible reprinting of Hokusai’s Great Wave\, probably the most famous Japanese woodblock print of all time. In honor of Ronin Gallery’s 50th anniversary\, the team has remastered this iconic image for a contemporary audience. A few of these extremely high-quality\, limited-edition reprints will be available for purchase.  \nFounded in 1995 by Shinkichi Numabe\, Numabe Mokuhan printers do not merely reproduce famous Japanese prints but “remaster” them. Formerly the principal printer for Toshi Yoshida\, Shinkichi Numabe brings decades of expertise to Numabe Mokuhan. Whether printing from original woodblocks or creating new ones\, Shinkichi and Hironobu Numabe breathe new life into familiar designs\, printing them to the highest standard. Championing the craftsmen\, tools\, and materials that combine to create each print\, Numabe Mokuhan shares the spirit of traditional woodblock printmaking with a new generation. \nThis talk and demonstration is a drop-in program suitable for all ages. Questions are encouraged!

SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Institute for Studies on Latin American Art
DESCRIPTION:In honor of our exhibition Puerto Rico in Print: The Posters of Lorenzo Homar\, Poster House has teamed up with the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) to offer our members a private tour of their latest two exhibitions\, Magali Lara: Stitched to the Body and Diana Dowek: Uprising in the Mirror.  \nTracing nearly two decades of work by pioneering Mexican artist\, Magali Lara: Stitched to the Body brings together over fifty works from 1977 to 1995\, highlighting the artist’s feminist and interdisciplinary approach across drawing\, collage\, painting\, and artist books. Engaging themes of identity\, memory\, and the body. Lara’s introspective yet socially resonant works explore the intersections of intimacy and resistance\, domesticity and desire. This first solo presentation of her work at ISLAA reaffirms Lara’s pivotal role in shaping feminist expression with Latin American contemporary art.  \nOn view at the same time\, Diana Dowek: Uprising in the Mirror features over twenty works by the artist\, including paintings and sculpture alongside archival ephemera from the Diana Dowek archival collection\, tracing a key period in the Argentine artist’s practice from 1967 to 1982. The works reflect Dowek’s powerful response to state-sanctioned violence during Argentina’s military dictatorship. A lifelong activist and unwavering ally to global human rights movements\, Dowek painted stirring scenes of repression and resistance with cinematic precision. Her early works presented alongside letters and photographs underscore her role in a transnational network of politically engaged women artists. In the first solo presentation of her work in New York City\, Dowek offers a timely reminder of how the past continues to haunt the political present.  \nImage: Image 1: Magali Lara\, De lo amoroso\, personal\, confidencial\, etcétera\, 1982. Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) \nThis tour will take place at the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art\, located at 142 Franklin St\, New York\, NY 10013. Space is limited! \nAccessibility Note: As this event will be taking place off site\, please let Poster House know in advance if you have any accessibility needs. Assistive listening devices\, ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation\, or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) are available upon request. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Ben Shahn at the Jewish Museum
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Lorenzo Homar’s personal and professional connection with the artist Ben Shahn\, Poster House members are invited to a special curatorial tour of Ben Shahn: On Nonconformity at the Jewish Museum.  \nIn this tour\, guest curator Dr. Laura Katzman will discuss the social-justice work of Ben Shahn\, among the most socially and politically engaged artists working in the United States from the Great Depression to the height of the Vietnam War. Dr. Katzman will lead Poster House members through this thematic exhibition featuring Shahn’s art across media\, focusing on his denouncement of authoritarianism and commitment to labor\, civil\, and human rights. As she highlights Shahn’s graphic work in printmaking\, posters\, lettering/calligraphy\, and commercial designs\, she will make connections between Shahn’s vision and that of Lorenzo Homar\, who believed that Shahn “revolutionized the graphic arts” and was one of the greatest influences on his work. Shahn\, in turn\, recognized that Homar and his pioneering workshop in Puerto Rico were instrumental in the refinement of silkscreen as an art form during the second half of the twentieth century. \nThis tour will take place at the Jewish Museum\, located at 1109 5th Ave &\, E 92nd St\, New York\, 10128. DESCRIPTION:In connection with Puerto Rico in Print: The Posters of Lorenzo Homar\, Poster House presents an intimate dialogue exploring the rich legacy of Latin American design. This program brings together experts Ramdwin González-Otero and Dr. Agustín Díez Fischer to discuss the intersection of art\, politics\, and cultural identity across the region. \nThe conversation will consider Lorenzo Homar’s practice through comparative perspectives and transnational frameworks. The speakers will reflect on how local histories\, from contemporary experiences in the Southern Cone to Puerto Rico’s lettering-driven poster tradition\, connect to contemporary forms of visual protest and institutional design while situating Homar’s work within broader movements in design\, film\, and the graphic arts. \nThis conversational format offers both scholarly insight and space for audience engagement. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn more about the dynamic and evolving history of Latin American design! \nRamdwin González-Otero is a designer\, educator\, and entrepreneur from the Caguas Valley in Puerto Rico whose practice spans brand strategy\, science communication\, and creative direction. He is a partner at the design studio Tembol and cofounder of the community‑minded venture 404 Coffee & Beers. He is also an Aspen Ideas Fellow. González-Otero’s interests and research engage cultural studies and national identity in Puerto Rico and the broader Caribbean\, analyzing how visual culture shapes collective memory and civic discourse. Coming from a graffiti background\, he focuses on lettering as both a political and aesthetic medium\, tracing its role from the lettering‑driven posters of the “Generación del 50” to contemporary forms of graphic protest. He has served as an adjunct instructor at the School of Design and Architecture in Puerto Rico\, exploring with his students the colonial paradigms embedded in the discipline. His collaborative work with cultural\, private\, and nonprofit organizations has earned him recognition from the Latin American Design Awards\, the Ibero‑American Design Biennial\, and the Falling Walls Science Summit. \nDr. Agustín Díez Fischer has a Ph.D. in Art History and Theory from the University of Buenos Aires. From 2017 to 2023\, he served as Director of the Centro de Estudios Espigas in Buenos Aires\, a research center and archive focused on Latin American art. Díez Fischer has received numerous grants and fellowships\, including the Terra Foundation Travel Grant\, and held positions as a Visiting Research Scholar and Visiting Assistant Professor in the program in Latin American Studies at Princeton University. From 2023 to 2024\, he was the Craig M. Cogut Visiting Professor at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Brown University. He is currently the Senior Manager of Research and Archives at the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) in New York. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Chiharu Shiota at Japan Society
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the Poster House’s recent exhibition\, Fallout: Atoms for War & Peace\, members are invited to a private tour of Japan Society’s exhibition\, Chiharu Shiota: Two Home Countries.  \nIn this exhibition\, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II\, Shiota explores wartime experiences and memories centered on a newly commissioned site-specific installation. She addresses parallels between the humanitarian tragedy of war and her personal struggles as she confronts her own mortality and her bicultural identity. Shiota draws connections between collective and personal experience and memory\, contemplating such universal themes as history\, humanity\, loss\, time\, space\, the body\, and national identity. \nChiharu Shiota (b. 1972) is a contemporary artist best known for her ephemeral installations in which fragments of memory are woven within webs of yarn that consume entire exhibition spaces. Shiota studied painting in Japan before training in performance art in Berlin\, Germany\, where she continues to live and work today. In her performances\, she often presents her physical body as a canvas\, coating it in red paint or smearing it with earth. \nThis event will take place at Japan Society\, 333 East 47th Street New York\, NY 10017. \nAccessibility Note: As this is an off-site event\, masks and clear masks are available free of charge with prior notification. SUMMARY:Under the Subway Sun: 120 Years of Subway Style
DESCRIPTION:The New York City Subway has a distinct aesthetic in the iconography of the city. In honor of our exhibition From the Bronx to the Battery: The Subway Sun\, Poster House has arranged a special walking tour of the subway with historian Thomas Rinaldi that will allow participants to explore its unique architecture and design. Using the trains themselves to hop from station to station\, attendees will trace the evolution of station design from the system’s opening in 1904 up to the present day\, taking advantage of off-peak hours to admire design elements like signage and lighting\, mosaics and Art Deco ironwork. We’ll talk about the origins and context of these details and the designers behind them. Subway fare is included with your tour ticket!     \nThis event is suitable for all ages\, but the usual challenges of the subway should be considered when bringing children. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to navigate the typical New York City subway crowds and noise. Not all stations are fully accessible\, and unforeseen circumstances (maintenance\, line closures\, etc) may impact the planned route and cause on-the-fly changes to the schedule.  \nThe meet up point will be emailed to ticket holders the day before the event. \nThomas Rinaldi is a New York-based author and architectural designer. His books include Patented: 1\,000 Design Patents (Phaidon\, 2021)\, New York Neon (W.W. Norton\, 2012)\, and Hudson Valley Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of an American Landscape (University Press of New England\, 2006). His design work is specialized in historic preservation and facade restoration in New York. He holds degrees from Georgetown University and Columbia University\, and has worked for the National Park Service\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation\, and the Central Park Conservancy.  \nAccessibility Note: The museum will provide headsets that are compatible with standard RF devices so that the tour guide can be heard above the noise of the subway. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation is also available upon request. Please note that many of the city’s subway stations are not accessible and can be hard to navigate with a group. While we aim to focus on accessible subway stops\, line closures\, repairs\, and other unpredictable circumstances may force us to consider alternate routes during the tour. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. Together\, these shows demonstrate how posters officially showcased the distinctive images and worldviews of two very different nations during the turbulent decade of the 1930s.  \nDrinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served. RSVP is required.  \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. For other event-related questions\, please contact info@posterhouse.org.
