SUMMARY:Sing for Science: Laurie Anderson & Dr. Zia Mian on the Science of Disarmament
DESCRIPTION:As the final event held in conjunction with the exhibition Fallout: Atoms for War & Peace\, Poster House is thrilled to partner with Sing for Science to host the groundbreaking artist and activist Laurie Anderson in conversation with nuclear weapons and policy expert Dr. Zia Mian. Together\, they’ll explore how scientists and advocates work to prevent the spread and use of nuclear weapons—and how artistic voices like Anderson’s have shaped the cultural imagination around disarmament.  \nDrawing from Anderson’s seminal 1982 album Big Science\, the conversation will explore how that work anticipated many of the tensions of the nuclear age and continues to resonate in today’s disarmament discourse. Moderated by Sing For Science host Matt Whyte\, this intimate conversation invites guests to consider how creative and scientific communities can work together in pursuit of peace. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. There is no reserved seating. Refreshments will be available to purchase before and after the event.  \nLaurie Anderson is a trailblazing American avant-garde artist\, composer\, and performance pioneer whose creativity bridges music\, visual art\, film\, and technology.Trained in classical violin from age five\, she later shifted her focus to art and performance\, earning a B.A. from Barnard (1969) and an M.F.A. from Columbia (1972). Anderson emerged in the 1970s NYC art scene with daring\, language- and tech-driven works. Her 1981 hit single “O Superman” reached No. 2 in the UK in 1981 and launched her recording career with the acclaimed album Big Science  Over her five-decade career\, she’s released multimedia shows (United States I–V\, Songs and Stories for Moby Dick)\, feature-film soundtracks (including Home of the Brave\, Life on a String)\, authored books\, and created installations showcased in major museums worldwide. \nZia Mian is an award-winning physicist and co-director of Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security\, where he has worked since 1997. His research includes the science\, policy\, and politics of nuclear disarmament\, arms control\, and nonproliferation. Mian helped found and co-chairs the Scientific Advisory Group of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and previously served on the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. He is a co-founder and leader of the Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction and is on the Board of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Mian received the 2014 Linus Pauling Legacy Award\, the 2019 Leo Szilard Award\, and in 2021 was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society for his contributions to nuclear disarmament. \nSing for Science is an award-winning\, top 10 music interview podcast on Apple Podcasts that features musicians exploring scientific topics in conversation with experts. Past episodes have featured Korn front man Jonathan Davis and author Mary Roach discussing mortuary science; Sia and sex therapist Alex Katehakis on attachment theory; and Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo with Python creator Guido van Rossum on coding—among many others that connect science-curious music fans to thought-provoking topics. The show is hosted by New York musician Matt Whyte\, whose credits include composing for Netflix’s Tiger King and Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened\, as well as fronting the mid-aughts band Earl Greyhound. Inspired by performing in a Pete Seeger memorial concert at Joe’s Pub in New York City\, Matt created the podcast to continue Seeger’s legacy of using music to engage with the world’s most pressing issues. Sing For Science is supported in part by a grant from the Simons Foundation. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Worm\, A Cuban Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Poster House members are invited to a private tour of the Society of Illustrators’s exhibition\, Worm: A Cuban American Odyssey • Edel Rodriguez.  \nWhen Fidel Castro opened the Mariel harbor to let Cubans sail for America\, Edel Rodriguez and his family took their chance. From the town of El Gabriel to the Mariel port to a rickety shrimping boat bound for Florida\, they joined the 1980 boatlift\, becoming “worms\,” as Castro called the departing Cubans. This exhibition brings together a large collection of original drawings from Rodriguez’s graphic memoir “Worm\,” along with the source material\, artifacts and photographs which inspired the author to write and illustrate his award winning graphic novel memoir.  \nThe exhibition also delves into Rodriguez’s political art. On display are the artist’s renowned magazine covers\, original paintings\, silkscreened posters and short films which tell the story of an immigrant artist fighting for freedom in today’s America. \nAccessibility Note: The Society of Illustrators is not wheelchair accessible. As this is an off-site event\, masks and clear masks are available free of charge if requested in advance. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Chiharu Shiota at Japan Society
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the Poster House’s recent exhibition\, Fallout: Atoms for War & Peace\, members are invited to a private tour of Japan Society’s exhibition\, Chiharu Shiota: Two Home Countries.  \nIn this exhibition\, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II\, Shiota explores wartime experiences and memories centered on a newly commissioned site-specific installation. She addresses parallels between the humanitarian tragedy of war and her personal struggles as she confronts her own mortality and her bicultural identity. Shiota draws connections between collective and personal experience and memory\, contemplating such universal themes as history\, humanity\, loss\, time\, space\, the body\, and national identity. \nChiharu Shiota (b. 1972) is a contemporary artist best known for her ephemeral installations in which fragments of memory are woven within webs of yarn that consume entire exhibition spaces. Shiota studied painting in Japan before training in performance art in Berlin\, Germany\, where she continues to live and work today. In her performances\, she often presents her physical body as a canvas\, coating it in red paint or smearing it with earth. \nThis event will take place at Japan Society\, 333 East 47th Street New York\, NY 10017. \nAccessibility Note: As this is an off-site event\, masks and clear masks are available free of charge with prior notification. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART. Japan Society is committed to offering programs and services that are accessible to all visitors. Public performance spaces\, classrooms and restrooms are ADA compliant and accessible to everyone. We offer free gallery admission to patrons with disabilities and an accompanying Personal Care Assistant.

SUMMARY:Under the Subway Sun: 120 Years of Subway Style
DESCRIPTION:The New York City Subway has a distinct aesthetic in the iconography of the city. In honor of our exhibition From the Bronx to the Battery: The Subway Sun\, Poster House has arranged a special walking tour of the subway with historian Thomas Rinaldi that will allow participants to explore its unique architecture and design. Using the trains themselves to hop from station to station\, attendees will trace the evolution of station design from the system’s opening in 1904 up to the present day\, taking advantage of off-peak hours to admire design elements like signage and lighting\, mosaics and Art Deco ironwork. We’ll talk about the origins and context of these details and the designers behind them. Subway fare is included with your tour ticket!     \nThis event is suitable for all ages\, but the usual challenges of the subway should be considered when bringing children. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to navigate the typical New York City subway crowds and noise. Not all stations are fully accessible\, and unforeseen circumstances (maintenance\, line closures\, etc) may impact the planned route and cause on-the-fly changes to the schedule.  \nThe meet up point will be emailed to ticket holders the day before the event. \nThomas Rinaldi is a New York-based author and architectural designer. His books include Patented: 1\,000 Design Patents (Phaidon\, 2021)\, New York Neon (W.W. Norton\, 2012)\, and Hudson Valley Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of an American Landscape (University Press of New England\, 2006). His design work is specialized in historic preservation and facade restoration in New York. He holds degrees from Georgetown University and Columbia University\, and has worked for the National Park Service\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation\, and the Central Park Conservancy.  \nAccessibility Note: The museum will provide headsets that are compatible with standard RF devices so that the tour guide can be heard above the noise of the subway. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation is also available upon request. Please note that many of the city’s subway stations are not accessible and can be hard to navigate with a group. While we aim to focus on accessible subway stops\, line closures\, repairs\, and other unpredictable circumstances may force us to consider alternate routes during the tour. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:First Friday: Sicilian & Italian Folk Music with Michela Musolino and Rosa Tatuata
DESCRIPTION:Experience the vibrant traditions of Sicilian and Southern Italian folk music with Michela Musolino and her ensemble\, Rosa Tatuata\, in a performance presented in connection with the exhibition The Future Was Then: The Changing Face of Fascist Italy. This program highlights the resilience of cultural expression in times of change\, showing how folk music continues to bridge past and present. \nDrawing on years of research into traditional instruments—including the tamburo (Sicilian frame drum)\, organetto\, marranzano (jaw’s harp)\, and zampogna (Southern Italian bagpipes)—Musolino and Rosa Tatuata weave a tapestry of sound that blends old-world authenticity with fresh interpretation.  \nJoin us for an evening of music that celebrates resilience\, joy\, and cultural memory—an opportunity to hear how ancient traditions continue to resonate in our world today. \nMichela Musolino is an internationally recognized Sicilian-American singer who explores her cultural roots and shares them with the world through the study and reinterpretation of the folk songs of Sicily and Southern Italy. With voice and frame drum\, Musolino sings songs of daily life\, songs of feast days\, songs of protest\, and songs of love\, weaving the ancient and the modern into powerful melodies. She is the founder of Rosa’s Drum\, a cultural events and educational organization which promotes and teaches folk traditions from Sicily and Southern Italy. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Boekie Woekie Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:Poster House members are invited to a private tour of the exhibition Boekie Woekie Amsterdam at the Center for Book Arts\, located at 28 West 27th St\, 3rd Fl\, New York\, NY 10001. \nBoekie Woekie is an artists’-run bookshop and gallery in Amsterdam founded in 1986 by a group of six artists. Henriëtte van Egten (Dutch)\, Rúna Thorkelsdóttir (Icelandic)\, and Jan Voss (German) from the original group have shaped this enterprise for artists’ publications that conventional bookshops find difficult to promote and sell. Alongside their own artistic careers\, the three dedicate their work to this “collective sculpture in progress” as they call it. At its heart is what art is all about: a free\, poetic\, and anarchic spirit and  a keen sense of humor.  \nThe exhibition focuses on Boekie Woekie’s activities and the many threads it has woven around the world since its beginning. Without losing sight of its unclassifiable nature\, it aims to illustrate the challenges and potential of its main principles: the uncompromising independence based on complete self-financing\, and its commitment to self-published and small-press titles by artists regardless of the extent of their fame.  \nAccessibility Note: Center for Book Arts welcomes all and makes every attempt to accommodate our community’s access needs. CBA’s building has an elevator\, with a backup freight elevator\, both accessible from street level. Galleries and studio space are wheelchair accessible with an ADA-compliant bathroom. The space is regularly cleaned and sanitized.
