Behind The Camera: The Unknown Women of Hollywood

April 7–October 9, 2022

Historically, there has been a lack of acknowledgement and appreciation for the role women played during the nascent years of the film business. Many women were instrumental during that time, providing fundamental roles behind the camera through original stories, screen writing, adaptation, set decoration, costume design, film editing, directing, and producing. This exhibition serves as an introduction to these pioneers through the lobbycards that promoted their finished work.

Because of their age and the unique nature of movie advertising paper, virtually every single lobbycard in this exhibition is one-of-a-kind and has never been displayed before in public. This powerful selection of images will feature the work of Marian Ainslee, Zoe Akins, Dorothy Arzner, Margaret Booth, Adele Buffington, Lenore J. Coffee, Beulah Marie Dix, Lady Duff Gordon, Edith Head, Anita Loos, Jeanie Macpherson, Frances Marion, Bess Meredyth, Zelda Sears, Blanche Sewell, Adele Rogers St. John, Jo Swerling, Dolly Tree, Eve Unsell, Sophie Wachner, Gwen Wakeling, and Dorothy Yost, as well as many other little-known female revolutionaries that helped shaped the movie business.
