Join typography historian Paul Shaw for a gallery tour of Blazing a Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters, focusing on lettering and graphic design. Waugh’s posters promoting the National Park System in the mid-1930s provide an excellent introduction to the graphic design and print production of the era. Learn about the differences between Art Deco (Art Moderne or Modernistic Art) and Modernism (represented by the Bauhaus, for example) between the two world wars, the difference between lettering and type, and how to distinguish between letterpress printing, offset printing, and silkscreen.
Paul Shaw is a calligrapher, graphic designer, design historian, and type historian who has led five gallery tours for Poster House. He has taught at several New York area universities and design schools over the past 45 years and is currently at the School of Visual Arts.
