Systematic Design Experiments for Letterpress with Dafi Kühne

Saturday, Apr 27–Sunday, Apr 28, 2024
11am–3pm

Poster House is pleased to partner with Center for Book Arts and the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York for a one-of-a-kind workshop with famed letterpress printer Dafi Kühne. Chipboard is a cheap and malleable material often found in book artists’ studios. As such, it will provide the foundation of this workshop. Visually, it provides possibilities ranging from rough aesthetics to very precise details. Through a play-centered approach, participants will be invited to explore the potential of chipboard as a printing-block production material. Working quickly from the drawing table to press and back, participants will engage with real-time results that inform successive experiments.. Throughout the workshop, the group will systematically analyze, discuss, and categorize these samples to develop a visual vocabulary that can be used in design. At the end of the second day, participants will work in groups to document the range of their new collective aesthetic language.

This workshop is open to designers and artists as well as to printmakers of all levels. No letterpress experience is required.

This two-day, in-person workshop takes place at the Center for Book Arts on Saturday & Sunday, April 27 & 28, from 11:00am – 3:00pm.
