Members-Only Tour: Ben Shahn at the Jewish Museum
6–7pm
In honor of Lorenzo Homar’s personal and professional connection with the artist Ben Shahn, Poster House members are invited to a special curatorial tour of Ben Shahn: On Nonconformity at the Jewish Museum.
In this tour, guest curator Dr. Laura Katzman will discuss the social-justice work of Ben Shahn, among the most socially and politically engaged artists working in the United States from the Great Depression to the height of the Vietnam War. Dr. Katzman will lead Poster House members through this thematic exhibition featuring Shahn’s art across media, focusing on his denouncement of authoritarianism and commitment to labor, civil, and human rights. As she highlights Shahn’s graphic work in printmaking, posters, lettering/calligraphy, and commercial designs, she will make connections between Shahn’s vision and that of Lorenzo Homar, who believed that Shahn “revolutionized the graphic arts” and was one of the greatest influences on his work. Shahn, in turn, recognized that Homar and his pioneering workshop in Puerto Rico were instrumental in the refinement of silkscreen as an art form during the second half of the twentieth century.
This tour will take place at the Jewish Museum, located at 1109 5th Ave &, E 92nd St, New York, 10128. Space is limited!
